In Rwanda, nearly 8,000 natural disaster events were recorded between 2020 and 2024, including severe flooding in May 2023 that returned in the loss of 137 lives. These disasters are estimated to cause annual economic losses and damage exceeding 200 million USD.
In Japan, on March 11th, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake triggered a tsunami up to 30 meters high that reached 5 kilometers inland, causing massive damage. Since then, both the public and private sectors have been working to make Japan a more resilient and sustainable country. Especially, JICA supports disaster risk reduction through a comprehensive approach that spans prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. Its assistance includes developing resilient infrastructure, strengthening disaster risk governance, and promoting the concept of “Build Back Better”—rebuilding communities to be more resilient than before—, drawing on Japan’s extensive experience in disaster management.
NEC, a global technology leader originating in Japan, is committed to supporting Rwanda in addressing its critical challenges by leveraging its advanced digital technologies, extensive expertise in Africa, and a long-standing tradition of innovation to contribute to sustainable and resilient development.
