Health and Productivity Management

Governance

At NEC, under the direction of the President, the CHRO oversees activities related to occupational health and safety companywide, including risk management, and reports on these activities to the Board of Directors and other organizations. Our Employee Relations Division, NEC Health Insurance Society, and NEC Business Intelligence collaborate as the core team for health management promotion, cooperating with relevant internal and external stakeholders. Medical professionals from our Wellness Promotion Center are assigned to each office to monitor local circumstances, and ongoing information exchanges with our labor union ensure robust dialogue on employee health and working conditions. Health and productivity management initiatives are also implemented across domestic consolidated subsidiaries, leveraging data, expertise, and know-how to promote group-wide engagement.

Health Management Promotion Framework

Strategy

In order to realize our Purpose, NEC is focusing on “achieving an optimal talent portfolio to increase our strategy execution capabilities” and “transforming people and culture to draw out the maximum potential of employees” based on job-based human resources management from the perspective of human capital management. Underlying this is the mental and physical health of our employees and their families, and we believe that only when each individual is in good mental and physical condition can we maximize our organizational performance and enhance our ability to execute strategies. Rather than simply focusing on the prevention of illness, the NEC Group Health Declaration established in fiscal year 2020 calls for efforts to improve the health of employees so that they can work with mental and physical vitality and achieve self-actualization. In this way, the Group aims to create even more social value.

NEC Group Health Declaration

Better Condition, Better Life

—Better Individual Lives Make a Richer Society—

We will create an environment in which employees can work with enthusiasm toward their dreams, and a culture in which employees and members of their family can look after their own physical condition and take care of their health. Harnessing the health and vitality of all our employees.

We carry out a variety of health promotion activities driven by the slogan “Better Condition, Better Life.” Based on three policies—Literacy, Practice, and Technology—we seek to reform health awareness, make behavioral change, and help people maintain healthier behavior. In recognition of these initiatives, NEC was included in the 2022 KENKO Investment for Health Stock Selection (2022), a certification program of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and received certification as a Outstanding Organizations of KENKO Investment for Health in 2025 (White 500, 2025) from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
In partnership with the CHRO, our “2025 Mid-term Management Plan” positions us to deliver on our goal of being an “employer of choice.” We are enhancing workplace health literacy, increasing the number of employees in good mental and physical condition, and aiming to achieve an employee engagement score of 50% for FY2025 by reducing health risks and boosting individual and organizational performance.

Risk Management

NEC manages employee health risks through regular health checkups, stress assessments, and working hour monitoring. High-risk cases prompt coordinated interventions between occupational physicians and HR to support disease prevention and early treatment. From the perspectives of business continuity and crisis management, we also provide know-how and health initiatives to partner companies, working to disseminate health and productivity management best practices throughout our value chain.

Implementation of Mental Health Measures

Since fiscal 2020, NEC has experienced an increase in leave taken due to mental health reasons. As a result, we have positioned mental healthcare as a key priority and strengthened our initiatives using both population-wide and high-risk approaches.

  • High-RiskApproach:
For employees identified as high-stress through stress checkups, we have increased the number of recommended interviews and improved interview completion rates, ensuring these individuals are connected to support services. Because factors such as workstyles and relationships with supervisors can underlie high stress, medical professionals and HR intervene in high-risk organizations to build a support system for resolving such issues. In fiscal 2025, we are targeting a 100% completion rate for interviews with high-stress employees and a 100% intervention rate for high-risk organizations. These initiatives involve engagement from management and line managers, as we strive to create psychologically safe workplaces.
  • PopulationApproach:
We conduct training sessions for all employees to cultivate awareness regarding self-care and line care responsibilities. The content of these trainings is continually refined based on participant understanding and satisfaction, ensuring their relevance and utility. In fiscal 2024, self-care training attendance reached 94.9% with a comprehension rate of 98.2%, while line care training reached an attendance rate of 92.4% and a satisfaction rate of 95.9%.

Additionally, we are creating an environment where employees can work with peace of mind through the provision of AI chatbot tools based on cognitive behavioral therapy, the establishment of various consultation services, and the development of workplace reintegration programs.

Promoting Health through Data Utilization

NEC strategically utilizes health, engagement, and workstyle data to drive more effective health and productivity management.

In fiscal 2024, we introduced a dashboard visualizing stress check results for managers, holding briefing sessions to help leaders better understand and improve organizational trends.
We have developed a system that leverages AI to analyze health checkup results and predict future health conditions, providing personalized recommendations to approximately 60,000 NEC Group employees.

Health Support for Younger Employees

Our company and 24 domestic affiliates are implementing the following initiatives, primarily aimed at fostering a self-care mindset.

  • New Graduates: Individual health counseling sessions with registered nurses/public health nurses for all new hires, focusing on health guidance and early intervention.
  • Age 27: Individual health consultations with nurses and public health nurses for all employees around their third year of employment, a time when responsibilities and life stages often change significantly.
  • Annual health checkups including comprehensive blood tests for all employees, enabling consistent lifestyle disease management from onboarding through retirement

Health promotion education and awareness campaigns

  • In fiscal 2024, NEC introduced the “WoLN” health point service app for all group employees and their families, promoting healthy lifestyle changes through events and programs such as walking and diet challenges.
  • To address the common challenge of sleep improvement, NEC developed and distributed a digital resource for better sleep hygiene among group companies.
  • Medical professionals regularly issue the “Well-Comi Health News” newsletter, providing practical, seasonal health tips.

Addressing women’s health, we created a “Gynecological Exam Experience” campaign to lower the hurdles to screening uptake, sharing personal reports that contributed to a 10.7% increase in screening rates among women in their 30s. This initiative was recognized with the 2025 Women’s Health Award for Promotion. Regular women’s health seminars are also held, attracting numerous participants.

NEC Health Insurance Association System

Cancer Screening Support

NEC Health Insurance provides an environment where employees can undergo cancer screenings during work hours at no cost to them, equivalent to receiving the same examination at an external medical institution. It also implements various measures to improve cancer screening participation rates.

Online Smoking Cessation Program

From fiscal year 2020 to fiscal year 2022, the "Online Smoking Cessation Program" provided free online smoking cessation outpatient services. 1,500 people participated, with 93% completing the smoking cessation treatment. (Eligible scope: NEC Corporation and NEC Health Insurance member companies)

Dental Checkups

Employees can utilize dental checkups covered by the NEC Health Insurance contract free of charge.

Promoting Health Management at External Partner Companies

  • In fiscal 2024, NEC conducted seminars and online exercise sessions for key software procurement partners to promote health management. These seminars were attended by representatives from 125 companies, and the online exercise sessions had participants from 14 companies. According to post-event surveys, all participants found the seminars meaningful, and 91% expressed interest in implementing similar initiatives within their own companies.
  • In fiscal 2025, interactive sessions for partner companies focused on sharing practical know-how for launching health and productivity management initiatives and included open discussions.

Indicators and Goals

Medium- to Long-term Goals, Priority Activities and Progress, Achievements, and Issues

Medium- to Long-term Goals and Priority Activities

(Scope: NEC Corporation unless otherwise specified) Period: April 2021 to March 2026

We will strategically utilize health data to identify organizational issues, implement effective measures, and establish a robust evaluation cycle. Aiming to achieve our company target of a 50% employee engagement score in fiscal 2025, we are committed to enhancing employees’ health literacy and increasing the number of employees who are in optimal mental and physical condition. In addition, for individuals and organizations identified as having high health risks, we will implement timely and appropriate interventions to further reduce health risks at both the individual and organizational level.

FY2025 Goals, Progress, Achievements and Issues, and FY2026 Goals

FY2025 Goals

  • By visualizing health data—such as through the creation of dashboards—we are able to accurately identify high-risk employees and organizations, implement targeted interventions, and thereby reduce health risks at both the individual and organizational level.
  • Through our “Client Zero” approach—whereby NEC first implements cutting-edge technologies in its own operations—we are proactively deploying innovative health initiatives. These efforts are designed to further enhance employees’ health literacy and promote improvements in both physical and mental wellbeing.

Progress, Achievements and Issues

  • As part of our approach to risk management for individuals and organizations, we have intensified our support for employees experiencing high levels of stress, with the aim of reducing the number of mental health-related absences. In fiscal 2024, we developed a stress check results dashboard for managers (development cost: approximately 2.75 million yen), with 70% of managers utilizing it to drive organizational improvements. For high-risk organizations, medical professionals have intervened directly, and the “supervisor support” score indicated in our employee survey improved by 3 points to 55 points in fiscal 2024 compared to the previous year. While the leave of absence rate increased by 0.15 points to 1.15%, we are reinforcing and reviewing our “Mental Health Support Program”—including return-to-work support—and will continue working on this challenge over the long term.
  • We have introduced our proprietary health points platform, "WoLN," for all employees of NEC Corporation and companies participating in the NEC Health Insurance Society. Within just six months of launch, over 5,000 users registered for the service and have been leveraging it to enhance their daily health management. As a result, the proportion of employees actively working to improve their lifestyle habits increased from 30.3% in fiscal 2023 to 30.8% in fiscal 2024, showing a continued upward trend. Additionally, the percentage of employees reporting favorable physical and mental condition rose from 37% in 2023 to 42% in 2024. Since these indicators directly influence our employee engagement score, we will continue to implement targeted initiatives to further raise health literacy and promote improvements in the overall wellbeing of our workforce.

FY2026 Goals

  • By strategically utilizing health data, we will continue to identify and address organizational issues, enhance employees’ health literacy, and increase the number of employees in optimal mental and physical condition. To this end, we will further reduce health risks for individuals and the organization and promote improvement in both individual and organizational performance. We will also establish an evaluation cycle to implement more efficient initiatives.
  • We will verify the effectiveness of the “Client Zero” initiative—which involves NEC first implementing cutting-edge technology within the company—and create case studies based on these outcomes.
