Objectives of NEC’s Intellectual Property Initiatives

Our vision is to utilize intellectual property to create social values and to demonstrate NEC’s technological advancements and implementation capabilities.

For over 120 years since its inception, NEC has prioritized developing and fostering advanced technologies, insights, and a breadth of experiences and ideas. To clearly articulate this vision, NEC announced its transformation into a social value innovator in 2013. In 2020, we redefined our core values and code of conduct under the NEC Way, which also includes the aforementioned Purpose. Furthermore, we established the NEC 2030VISION, a roadmap to the future we aspire to by 2030. This vision focuses on envisioning what life would be like a decade from now and striving towards creating an ideal environment, society, and way of living.This vision a key factor which guides NEC’s path forward and goes in hand with our commitment to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, the Mid-Term Management Plan 2025 serves as a key milestone in our business plan to realize the NEC 2030VISION.

NEC has consistently prioritized advanced technology as a cornerstone of its business strategy. In areas such as AI, video and image processing, communications, and security, NEC is a global leader often recognized at prestigious international conferences and, notably, NEC’s face, iris, and fingerprint recognition technologies have consistently ranked first in global benchmark tests by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). We actively strive for advances in intellectual property initiatives in our areas of technological strength and have cumulatively held the highest number of international patent applications in face recognition, biometrics, video analytics, and AI in the world since 2001. Additionally, NEC’s IP portfolios related to its core technologies have received high praises from external independent research firms.

Moreover, NEC’s intellectual property initiatives cover a wide range of areas, not just in its core technologies, but also in products and services that include these technologies. And we are dedicated to creating new social values in partnership with our customers and partners we continue to build an IP portfolio that accelerates collaborative creation and social implementation -- focusing on research and development, as well as business growth within an ecosystem framework.
