NEC Facilitates the Global Expansion of a Startup Focusing on the Advanced Use of Energy-Related Data Through Intellectual Property Transfer

NEC is contributing to the growth of startups and tackling of social issues through the transfer and effective use of its intellectual property. Recently, NEC transferred two patents, one from Japan and one from the United States, to Informetis Co., Ltd., a company that aims to contribute to decarbonization and improve everyday convenience by analyzing energy-related data using AI. Headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, and led by CEO Taro Tadano, Informetis was established as a spin-out from Sony Corporation and is working to build a strong patent portfolio capable of even competing with large corporations in the global technology development field. In line with its business objectives, NEC is supporting Informetis in strengthening its patent portfolio through this patent transfer.

Informetis is advancing the application of energy-related data through an approach known as “Energy Informatics.” This approach involves analyzing energy usage data to improve power usage efficiency and optimization, contribute to decarbonization, and interpret patterns of human activity—all of which contribute to greater convenience and functionality in social systems. Informetis plans to expand this advanced use of data by applying it to information collected from the approximately 60 million smart meters installed in homes across Japan.

At Informetis, one of the company’s key management priorities is to strengthen its analytical technologies and intellectual property, particularly in its patent strategy. The patents transferred by NEC will enhance Informetis's patent portfolio and support the company’s growth of its Energy Informatics business both within Japan and internationally.

Through the use of its intellectual property, NEC continues to contribute to solving social issues and creating new value by supporting startups. NEC will continue to actively promote the further use and transfer of its intellectual property to support the implementation of innovative solutions across a diverse range of fields.
