Submarine Cable Systems

Connecting Continents and Communities

  • In recent years, the rise of digital technologies—such as AI, data centers, and cloud services—has driven an increasing demand for high-capacity international networks. Submarine cables play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide and supporting a safe and prosperous global society.

For over half a century, NEC has been building the backbone of global communications, laying over 400,000 km of submarine cables—enough to circle the Earth 10 times.
NEC is committed to enhancing the lives of people around the world by leveraging digital infrastructure to address global social challenges and contribute to a safer, more prosperous future.

Our Capabilities

Global Footprint

NEC has laid over 400,000 km of submarine cables since 1964—enough to circle the Earth 10 times.

NEC enables global connectivity, supporting 99% of international data traffic with strong experience in Asia-Pacific, India and Atlantic.
Advanced Technology

NEC enables high-capacity, high-reliability, and long-lifetime communication through advanced optical transmission technologies.

Our systems are designed to operate for over 25 years at depths of up to 8,000m, with full E2E solutions from design to maintenance.
Social Commitment

NEC ensures secure and resilient networks with all submarine cables and related equipment made in Japan.

NEC also works with global organizations to help close the digital divide.

Candle submarine cable system

The Candle is an 8,000 km submarine cable system connecting Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. This cable system will be one of the first in the Asia-Pacific region to use a 24-fiber pair cable, to support the strong demand for communications in the region.

Asia United Gateway East (AUG East) submarine cable system

The AUG East is an 8,900 km submarine cable system connecting Singapore and Japan, with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan. Designed using the latest submarine fiber optic technologies, AUG East will feature a high-count fiber pair system delivering unprecedented bandwidth capacity, enabling support for millions of simultaneous ultra high-definition video streams.

MIST submarine cable System

The MIST is an 8,100 km submarine cable system connecting Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and India (Mumbai and Chennai). This cable system employs the latest optical wavelength division multiplexing technology, which is capable of transmitting more than 216 terabits per second (Tbps).
