Participating in standardization activities in the area of cryptography

After majoring in theoretical cryptography at university and completing a master’s program, she joined NEC in April 2023. Studying digital signature technology (key management technology) using biometrics, she submitted a research paper and gave a presentation at the International Conference of the Biometrics Special Interest Group in 2023 (BIOSIG 2023) as a co-author. She has also submitted research papers to the Symposium on Cryptography and Information Security (SCIS), one of the largest academic societies in the fields of cryptography and security in Japan.

The world’s most advanced key management technology
I am currently doing research on a digital signature technology using biometrics. Digital signatures that we are commonly using today work by storing cryptographic keys on devices such as smartphones. However, this leaves a risk of the digital signature being fabricated should the device be stolen. When you look at the world far and wide, there are countries and regions where smartphones have not yet reached widespread penetration, such as the case in India. We are still at a point where we cannot equally deliver safety in digital signatures across the globe. However, if we could use biometric information―face and iris for example―as keys, there would be no concern for theft. You don't even need to have a device―more people would equally be able to access and enjoy safe and secure services. Even that aside, it’s simply way more convenient to be able to identify yourself without any device.
As of today, Japan has a lead in the research of this field. In particular, NEC has an advantage with its many biometric identification technologies, including face recognition and iris recognition. In the area of cryptographic research, we have Kazuhiko Minematsu and many others who have numerous achievements in the academia.
While these technologies may take several years until practical use, I feel the challenge to be well worthwhile, studying the most advanced technology in the world as we pay attention to the implementation of the transitional phase.

A people-friendly workplace for both genders
The reason why I was interested in NEC was its participation in SCIS, a cryptographic society in Japan. When I went to NEC’s orientation to listen to what they have to say, I got the first impression that everyone I spoke to was every gentle. I also got to talk with two female researchers from the cryptography research team and see that female researchers are playing an active part, which encouraged me.
One of them in particular was working as an Assistant Manager while raising a child. She mentioned that it was easy to work thanks to the discretionary work system. She further elaborated that she can freely drop off and pick up her child at daycare by finding time during work at home, which I found was relieving. And this isn't just about women. After joining NEC, I found that there are quite a few men who excuse themselves from work to drop off or pick up their children at daycare. The company also actively promotes male employees to take childcare leaves.
While you are still in your early years of work, you will have to work specified work hours instead of the flexible work hours offered by the discretionary work system. However, the Super-flex System allows you to work without caring too much about time. In fact, I take naps and breaks when I need them. It is also convenient for going to hospitals and administrative or government offices on weekdays.

This is something I realized after joining NEC: it has an exhaustive benefits package. I find the cafeteria plan (selective benefit program) to be particularly excellent. Each employee receives 86,000 points every year which they can use on books or rent or whatever else they need. You can even use points to purchase time-saving appliances. I heard from a senior employee that he bought a robot vacuum cleaner by saving up points over a couple of years. Moreover, if you are using points for wellbeing or self-improvement purposes, you can apply points to 1.2 to 2 times the normal monetary costs, so many people are taking English lessons or going to a gym.
Another key benefit is the abundant paid holidays. You can take days off the weekdays during the Golden Week period, as well as year-end and New Year’s holiday, as special leaves to enjoy extended holidays. Employees also have a special day off in June, which has no national holiday. I get envied by people working for other companies for the number of paid holidays we get. *LOL*

Aiming to be an active part of standardization activities
What I wish to pursue in the future is to be in a position to lead standardization activities. I am developing an interest in the process of preparing the systems and legislation required to apply technologies to practical use in society. Hopefully I can play a pivotal role in such activities someday.
What initially spurred my interest was the shocking experience I had when I started participating in meetings for the standardization of key management for blockchain wallets last year. In standardization activities, stakeholders with different backgrounds gather for heated discussions to cultivate common understanding. I was in a slight shock when I participated in one of these meetings for the first time. *LOL*
In a setting where people talk from different standpoints, you realize that even terminology can be interpreted differently. I cannot but feel the complexity in getting all stakeholders to discuss with a common language. Having said that, I still find it inspiring to listen to people speak from different perspectives, which enlightens me with issues that I would have never realized on my own. Listening closely to what others in different positions have to say and having dialogues and discussions with them to work out differences is essential for social implementation. I still don't have the capacity to accomplish such mission, but currently I am working on sharing issues from different stakeholders for discussion and distributing documents to promote common understanding in order to further facilitate discussions. Through such activities, I am working toward someday becoming a researcher who can be a pivotal part of standardization.

My hobby is reading. I used to prefer reading serious literature, but now I also started enjoying mystery novels through a reading group within the team. Not to mention specialized books on cryptography, we mutually borrow and lend novels and other fun reads as well within the team. I am also hooked on a foreign drama that I started watching to improve my English skills. Keeping my eyes on participating in standardization activities, I am studying English so that I can follow and keep up with quick English conversations.
