NEC Space Systems

NEC's space-related business began in 1956 when it delivered a rocket telemetry transmitter-receiver system to the Production Engineering Laboratory of the University of Tokyo. NEC then led the development of Japan's first satellite, Ohsumi, which was launched in 1970. Since then, we have been engaged in the development of more than 50 satellites, including communications, broadcast, Earth observation, astronomical observation, engineering test and interplanetary exploration satellites.

In addition to the satellite business, we have long experience in a wide range of space applications, including on-board equipment such as transponders and gyroscopes which have good sales results in both Japan and abroad, as well as ground systems for controlling satellites and the processing of graphic observation data, RSGIS, and space robots.

NEC will continue to meet customers' needs for higher quality and reliability through more advanced technologies and the knowledge and experience we have acquired over 50 plus years in the space business, as well as strengthening our competitiveness in global markets through ongoing technological innovation.

NEC restructured its space business organization in April 2007 in order to reinforce the framework for expanding its space-related business.

The satellite sales and development & design functions were moved from NEC TOSHIBA Space Systems to the NEC's corporate organization. The satellite equipment sales function was included in the Commercial Satellite Sales Group, and the system development & design function was included in the Space System Division. NEC TOSHIBA Space Systems was restructured as a business specializing in the development, design, manufacturing and maintenance of subsystems and components.

A series of restructuring initiatives resulted in the establishment of a business organization that enabled NEC to commit itself to developing its space business operations and related business responsibilities (e.g. responsibilities for agreements, systems and product quality).

The Space Business Promotion Office is in charge of all of space business promotion activivty includes business planning / proposing and information distribution.
