“Insect Identification Support Service” using image recognition technology

Identifies whether an insect photographed by a smartphone or other device is a pest or not by searching a database that contains images of many different types of insects.

Features

  • The service uses the expertise and patented image recognition technology developed by Professor Miki Haseyama and her team at the Laboratory of Media Dynamics, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Hokkaido University during studies into searching images based on an associative search system. With this technology, an image of a specific insect can be referenced against a database that contains images of many different types of insects and identified based on similarities with insects in the database.
  • As many insects have a very similar appearance, being able to immediately identify the type of an insect found on crops enables the implementation of appropriate pest control to make farm produce safer and improve productivity.
