Carbon Statistics

Beginning FY 2011, "carbon statistics" were introduced to raise awareness of the organizations and individual employees so as to promote CO₂ emission reductions by visualizing annual changes in total CO₂ emissions and contributions to reduction in entire business activities for each Group company or each organization.

What are carbon statistics?

CO₂ emissions are measured and analyzed as total CO₂ emissions by adding CO₂ emissions caused by use of paper and business trips of employees in addition to energy such as electricity, gas, and oil and distribution of goods totalized in the past. In addition to CO₂ emission reductions by the customers and society through provisioning of IT solutions totalized in the past, contribution to CO₂ emission reductions through the use of renewable energy and afforestation activities are added to measure the total contributions in CO₂ emission reductions.
Carbon statistics are intended for the promotion of environmental activities, so as to increase each year the quantitative contribution to pure reductions representing a difference between total CO₂ emissions and contribution to CO₂ emission reductions. For example, management is performed to promote activities for a contribution to CO₂ emission reductions so that CO₂ emissions are reduced in total even if CO₂ emissions are increased through an increase in production activities.

FY 2012 result of carbon statistics

The quantitative contribution to pure reductions by the NEC Group for FY 2012 was 1.86 million tons, up 300,000 tons compared with FY 2011. This result is greatly influenced by an increase in the contribution to CO₂ emission reduction of all of society through provisioning of IT solutions and by a reduction in CO₂ emissions through less energy consumption by production sites and offices achieved through electricity saving and other measures.

Effect of curtailment of CO₂ emissions caused by business trips by remote conferencing (NEC Corporation)

Remote conferencing such as video conferencing, web conferencing, and telephone conferencing is encouraged to reduce CO₂ emissions caused by business trips of employees. The CO₂ emission curtailment for FY 2012 through remote conferencing totaled 33,000 tons. CO₂ emissions for NEC Corporation caused by business trips would have totaled 59,000 tons had it not been for remote conferencing. This means that the use of remote conferencing reduced CO₂ emissions due to business trips by 56%.
