Environmental Activities at North American subsidiary

sample_documents
During FY 2012, efforts were made to develop and tailor online learning activities focusing on various environmental issues to be introduced to NEC employees. This type of training serves the following purposes.
  • To reinforce awareness of basic environmental issues
  • To promote mindfulness of environmental issues in daily work activities
  • To provide examples of NEC’s current environmental activities
  • To show some of NEC’s green product innovations
This online environmental awareness training will consist of two separate educational courses. The first course focuses on those environmental issues common to many different business sectors, such as recycling and energy saving activities. The second course contains information focusing primarily on NEC activities, initiatives such as the NEC Environmental Mid-Term plan, and products. Finalized at the end of FY 2012, these online learning activities will be rolled out to NEC employees during FY 2013.

In order to identify those areas that should be included in these online training experiences, NEC continued and expanded upon employee survey activities. These survey activities were used both as a tool to gauge the current level of environmental awareness among employees and as a vehicle to provide a better understanding of those issues to those who may need it. Responses to these surveys continue to be favorable and the results have been useful in the preparation of new training materials.

REACH compliance by European subsidiaries

Under the REACH regulation, which regulates all chemicals that are manufactured in Europe or imported to Europe, if a molded article (product, etc.) contains substances of very high concern in an amount that exceeds 0.1wt%, the supplier is required to disclose this information to the receiving party. This is a binding requirement for BtoB business.
In order to ensure the efficient provision of information in compliance with REACH, a system for providing customers with this information has been established under the leadership of NEC Europe, the umbrella organization for Europe.

‘Green Vision’ initiatives by NEC Display Solutions Europe
NEC Display Solutions Europe has formed a ‘Green Vision’ cross-functional team to contribute to the environment and to realise ‘an information society friendly to humans and the earth,’ as stated in the NEC Group Vision 2017.

The Green Vision team will launch a number of ‘Green Vision’ initiatives and activities, which will focus on energy efficiency and better recycling. Avoiding the use of toxic substances in the manufacturing process and an environmentally conscious corporate philosophy are also core elements of this concept.

Also, NEC Display Solutions strives to educate its partners to understand and measure their environmental impact. Together with NEC Display Solutions, partners can sustainably increase their energy efficiency and thus reduce their carbon footprint, which will help to protect the environment.

Clean Shipping Index
Earlier in 2013, NEC Display Solutions joined the Clean Shipping Index, which provides a rating to ships and shipping companies based on their environmental performance. By becoming a member, NEC Display Solutions signalled to the global carrier market the importance of environmental impact of shipping and emphasised to its partners that minimising this impact is a key selection criteria.

By joining a network of international shippers with a joint interest in decreasing the environmental effects of logistic operations, NEC Display Solutions gained access to knowledge about ‘green’ shipping methods. This in turn will support NEC Display Solutions in its drive to measure its ecological footprint and choose the most economically-friendly transport options available.

Re-Trade

ReTrade programme for used projectors
In March 2013, NEC Display Solutions Europe launched its refurbish and reuse programme for aged projectors of any model and make. Customers, who recently purchased an NEC projector can trade-in their used product in the NEC ReTrade programme and receive a cash return. The returned units will be refurbished for future reuse in the market or recycled responsibly to reduce material waste and unnecessary resource consumption.

NEC’s ‘return, refurbish and reuse’ approach aims to help preserve the environment and provides an incentive to customers by reducing the acquisition costs of a new projector. To participate, consumers and dealers can simply visit the ReTrade website and provide proof of an NEC projector purchase in the last three months. Once the details of the old and new projectors are registered, an instant trade-in quote will be provided and the customer receives an email with a free shipping label to send in the used product.

In line with NEC’s Green Vision, to minimise environmental impact over the entire product lifecycle, 85 per cent of the returned projectors in the ReTrade programme will be refurbished and returned to the market. This reduces material waste, disposal of hazardous substances and unnecessary resource consumption. The remaining projectors, which are unfit for reuse, will be professionally recycled.

The NEC ReTrade programme is available to customers in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Netherlands and the United Kingdom and will be soon extended to other European countries.
