CO₂ Emissions in Business Life Cycle

FY 2012

CO₂ Emissions in Business Life Cycles

NEC aims to ascertain the amount of CO₂ emitted over the entire life cycle of its business operations, from materials procurement to production, distribution, and use by the customer. In the procurement phase, CO₂ emissions are estimated by tracing information on parts and materials purchased by NEC all the way back to resource extraction. In the customer use phase, emissions are estimated by conducting product life cycle assessment (LCA).
By continually assessing and determining this data, NEC can take measures to reduce the environmental impact of its products effectively.
In FY 2012, CO₂ emissions were reduced by 70,000 tons as a whole for the NEC Group owing to a reduction of emissions in business activities even though CO₂ emissions in the use phase at customer sites increased due to increase of shipments of products.

CO2 emission at customer use phases decreased as the energy-saving products proliferated and this resulted in an overall reduction in unit CO2 emission.
Procurement of
The amount of CO₂ emitted from the materials, parts, and manufacturing
Materials and
equipment purchased each year by the entire NEC Group from outside
Parts:
suppliers, in each phase from extraction of raw materials to manufacture of parts and products.
Because there have been no major changes to the business structure, the calculations were done by dividing proportionately by actual procurement amounts.
Business
The amount of CO₂ emitted through the use of energy by NEC such as
Operations:
electricity, oil, and gas. It was calculated based on energy consumption and life cycle assessment (LCA) data.
Distribution:
The amount of CO₂ emitted due to fuel use during product transportation.
Use by Customer:
The amount of CO₂ emitted during the use of all products shipped each year. This is based on a total obtained by multiplying the annual number of products shipped by the amount of power consumption by each. The weighted average value for each product group is used for the reduction rate. Power saving mode is provided in each product.
*:This item is calculated using the system introduced in FY2006. The values before FY 2006 are calculated based on the LCA data assessed in FY 2003.
Recycling:
This value was calculated by subtracting the amount of CO₂ estimated to be emitted when recycled materials were manufactured from raw materials from the CO₂ emissions in each recycling process. It was calculated based on NEC's annual collection and recycling data.

(Note 1) CO₂ emissions upon distribution are reported based only on emissions from NEC Logistics, the NEC Group's distribution company.

*Scope: NEC Japan (headquarters, 6 plants, and 3 laboratories), 23 manufacturing subsidiaries, 41 service and software subsidiaries, and 14 independent affiliates. (The data for independent affiliates has been added. Past data has been modified to include this independent affiliate data.)
