NEC develops technology to automate the reading of complex diagrams without losing information
Tokyo, November 27, 2024 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) has developed a groundbreaking technology that automates the process of converting complex diagrams into data without losing any information—previously a task that required significant manual effort and time. This innovation aims to broaden the types of data that can be utilized with generative AI, expanding its application across various tasks. This service will be launched in Japan from January 2025.

Recently, as businesses and public institutions advance operational transformation using generative AI, there is a growing anticipation for the utilization of documents containing numerous diagrams, such as operation manuals and product catalogs, to expand generative AI applications in the workplace.
Tasks involving the interpretation of complex diagrams, while not particularly difficult for humans, have traditionally required significant manual effort to maintain accuracy, or alternatively, have sacrificed precision by relying on automated text-only extraction. However, with NEC's newly developed technology, diagrams can now be automatically and accurately read while preserving their structural information.
This technology employs processing methods that account for both the format and meaning of the content, enabling precise recognition of entire diagrams as well as the accurate reading of detailed text. By automating this high-accuracy reading process, the technology accelerates the use of diagram-heavy documents, such as operation manuals and product catalogs, in generative AI applications. This enhances response accuracy and expands the range of use cases that involve diagram data.

Additionally, the technology facilitates the digitization of highly specialized diagrams, such as profit and loss statements, process flowcharts, and organizational charts. These digitized diagrams can be utilized for additional training needed to fine-tune AI models or integrated into internal document search systems, such as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). This paves the way for developing AI specialized in particular fields and enables the execution of advanced tasks that were previously unattainable.

NEC offers end-to-end digital transformation (DX) services, from strategy and concept consulting to implementation-focused offerings, based on the three pillars of business models, technology, and organization/talent. Additionally, in its shift from a traditional systems integrator to a "Value Driver," NEC restructured its value creation model under the name “NEC BluStellar" (*), which leverages NEC's cutting-edge technologies, developed and refined through years of experience and proven cross-industry expertise, aiming to transform business models, address social challenges, resolve management issues faced by customers, and lead them into a brighter future.
