NEC provides SDN solution for Ryukoku University in Kyoto

- Reduces workload for administrative staff -

Tokyo, December 8, 2015 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) has supplied a new network infrastructure utilizing software-defined networking (SDN) for Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan. NEC's SDN-based network infrastructure will allow for centralized network management by physically integrating multiple education information network systems in use across three different campuses of the university. The introduction of SDN to Ryukoku University, which has approximately 20,000 students, represents one of the largest cases of its kind in Japan.

At Ryukoku University, multiple server, storage and networks were built for individual data systems. These systems included the education information system used by students for their class and research work, the administrative data system used primarily by administrative staff, and the academic information system for literature and academic database management.

This new infrastructure was implemented in order to streamline the inefficiencies associated with costs and network operations stemming from the multiple network systems in use across the three individual campuses. The former systems placed a heavy burden on the IT and administrative staff due to the extensive work involved in changing, testing, and verifying multiple system settings whenever changes were made to the organizational structure and the stationing of the staff.

Today, Ryukoku University is utilizing NEC's UNIVERGE PF Series to implement SDN, aiming to eliminate redundancies in the network equipment configuration. This initiative allows for centralized network management, also making it possible to change or upscale the network system settings across the three campuses with an SDN controller in place.

SDN-based networks will help Ryukoku University improve the level of efficiency in relation to network operations and reduce the workload of its administrative staff. This will also help create an environment that enables the university administrative staff to stay focused on promoting even more comprehensive support for the students as they work to further improve the quality of education.
