NEC's third-party evaluation in biometric authentication
NEC began researching fingerprint authentication technology in 1971, launched our first fingerprint authentication system for government in 1982, and has been expanding overseas since the late 1990s. In terms of face recognition, we have been conducting R&D started in 1989 and expanding worldwide since the late 2000s.
NEC is further enhancing its accuracy and speed, which has led to achieving the highest level of global recognition, securing top positions multiple times in vendor tests conducted by the U.S. government. In recent years, we have been advancing authentication technologies for parts other than faces and fingers, and pursuing multimodal systems that combine multiple authentication technologies, expanding their application in various everyday scenes.

NEC's face recognition, iris recognition, and fingerprint recognition technologies have been highly ranked by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Technical Evaluation
NEC was recognized as a "Market Leader" in the "Frost Radar™: Biometric Solutions, 2025" report published by global research firm Frost & Sullivan.

Marketability Evaluation

NEC was recognized as a "Market Leader" in the "Frost Radar™: Biometric Solutions, 2025" report published by global research firm Frost & Sullivan, marking the third consecutive time, following the previous survey in 2022. In this market survey, Frost & Sullivan assessed NEC’s leadership in the Frost Radar™ Innovation Index as a result of continuous innovation across NEC’s broad biometric business portfolio.
Achievement Evaluation
NEC's systems and services utilizing biometric authentication have been evaluated by external organizations.

NEC becomes the first company in the biometrics industry to receive Frost & Sullivan’s Global Biometric Solutions Company of the Year recognition, underscoring its leadership and innovation.
Frost & Sullivan bestows Best Practices Awards annually to companies that have achieved outstanding performance in their respective industries based on a rigorous analytical process. This year, NEC has been honored with the most prestigious award, the Company of the Year Award.

NEC Fellow Hitoshi Imaoka has received Japan's prestigious ’Medal with Purple Ribbon’ award in Spring 2023, which is presented by the Cabinet Office to persons who have made outstanding achievements in science and technology, academia, and the field of sports and culture.
The award recognizes Imaoka’s contributions to safety and security around the world through the development and commercialization of high accuracy face recognition technology.
