Biometrics Interview Series: Face to Face with Hong Kong

----------------------
I can say we are the pioneer in adopting biometrics.
Biometrics as a service is expected to grow.
----------------------

Hong Kong is renowned not only for its neon cityscape, but also as a bustling business hub in both the physical and digital worlds.
In a Frost and Sullivan report, NEC has been named a global leader for its biometrics capabilities and future-facing thinking. Let's see how its technologies are transforming businesses and enriching people's lives in this part of the world!

What is the biometric business like in your region/country?

The biometrics business in Hong Kong is continuously expanding vertically and horizontally. We have been promoting biometrics for automation in the past 30 years. I can say we are the pioneer in adopting biometrics for the vast application of seamless immigration clearance at the borders between China, HK and Macao. We have extended our technologies and knowhow for a seamless passenger travel journey to the airport from check-in, self-bag drop, immigration clearance, all the way to boarding.

What is NEC's key differentiator in biometrics?

The major key differentiator of course is our high detection and matching accuracy, consistent performance. Also, continuous R&D investment in Biometrics is very important to enhance the performance and highly adopt to ever-changing environment and human's behaviour. Lastly and most importantly, our best practice and code of conduct help to build a system where everyone can enjoy the full benefits of Biometrics technology without fearing for their privacy or security.

How are your customers using biometrics to transform?

I think Biometrics is the most practical means for identifying a person's identity automatically. The Government and the Airport have already adopted biometrics for passenger clearance at the borders, to streamline the travel process and enhance security measures.
Our enterprise customers have also adopted Biometrics for access control.

What are you most excited about for the future of biometrics?

It is exciting for us to see biometrics go mainstream sometimes in the future. The growing use of biometrics and "biometrics as a service" is expected to grow. Like the airlines using face recognition biometrics for check in and boarding. Banks using biometrics for customer identification. They are using "Biometrics as a service."With highly secured and highly accurate multimodal biometrics, we may not be required to bring any physical identification document with us for travel or entry access in the future.
