Biometrics Interview Series: Face to Face with Australia/New Zealand

----------------------
In some ways, biometrics is the backbone of society.
Our specialty, I think, is trust.
We have a dream team.
----------------------

Known for their fascinating wildlife and breathtaking landscapes, The Australia and New Zealand region is a much sought-after market for business growth.
In a Frost & Sullivan report, NEC has been named a global leader for its biometrics capabilities and future-facing thinking.
Let's see how its technologies are transforming businesses in this part of the world.

What is the biometric business like in your region?

NEC's been operating in this region for over 30 years and providing assurity to government agencies in primarily three areas.
One is to verify identity, the second is to reduce fraud, and the third is to enable digital identity as we move forward.

What is NEC's key differentiator in biometrics?

Our specialty, I think, is trust.
We work with government agencies around the world, and we're trusted.
Why is that?
Well, we have one of the leading, if not leading, algorithms in the world, and we have had years of testing through NIST, and more importantly, we've had billions of transactions that go through our system.
So we have a lot of experience in terms of the ongoing development of this special algorithm.
We have a dream team.
We have...
On average, our team has 20 years of tenure, so we really understand how to deploy and how to work within the system in a trusted way.

How are your customers using biometrics to transform?

Customers are using NEC biometrics to transform business in a multitude of ways.
For example, whether you're going from curb to gate, you go into an airport and you are using your digitalidentity as part of your app.
Or for example,if I go into my phone and I open up my phone, the reality is the phone trusts who I am.
However, with NEC's biometrics and our digital identity, we will take a government document and we will match it with a face, a biometric, into the wallet.
So when you open up the wallet,it actually knows I am who I am because I verified it with a government credential.

What are you most excited about for the future of biometrics?

In some ways, biometrics is the backbone of society, protecting borders, enabling government to have confidence in terms of who they're serving.
NEC is not into mass surveillance.
In fact, what we're trying to do is enable better processes of identifying individuals for more secure identity.
