Striving to become one of Japan’s foremost system integrators: Value creation as envisioned by Yushi Ushijima, president of newly established NESIC Holdings

Japanese

On July 1, 2025, NESIC Holdings was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of NEC. This new company came to be as a result of two companies joining forces: NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation, which primarily focuses on ICT systems, construction, and engineering, and NEC Nexsolutions, Ltd., which specializes in IT services. With plans in the works to integrate NEC's fire and disaster prevention business into NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation, NESIC Holdings is poised to grow to a scale of 10,000 employees, achieve sales totaling approximately 550 billion yen, and boast a customer base of 26,000 companies. This newest member of the NEC Group aspires to become a leading system integrator in Japan. We recently sat down with Yushi Ushijima, the president of the newly established NESIC Holdings, who also serves as NEC Corporate Executive Vice President, to discuss his vision for creating social value through the new company.

Filming YouTube videos in the workplace: "I would like to see our employees continue to embrace challenges"

When asked about his favorite motto, Ushijima told us, "'Do not regret what you have done,' one of the 21 rules for life written by the legendary samurai and philosopher Miyamoto Musashi." He then added, "It doesn't really matter how much you worry. Things either work out or they don't. Knowing that, I focus on deciding on a course of action swiftly and then taking action as quickly as possible."

During his eight-year tenure beginning in 2017 as president and chairman of NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation, Ushijima launched his own YouTube project through which he filmed a series of videos posted on the company's official YouTube channel. In these videos, he covered what was happening on the frontlines of the company's business. Reminiscing about those days, Ushijima recalls, "Back then it was rare for a company president to take on the persona of a YouTuber, but I did it because I wanted to show our employees what it means to be committed to taking on new challenges."

There is also one more challenge that remains near and dear to Ushijima—Fuji Chojun Salmon. Ushijima shared with us the details of this project, saying, "As part of our efforts to utilize IT to change the way people work in primary industry, we got involved in the farming of salmon through land-based aquaculture. Nowadays, the salmon we raise under the brand name Fuji Chojun Salmon are even available on Furusato Nozei (Hometown Tax) Program* websites."

"Lite & Quick" provision of IT and network services

The newly established NESIC Holdings led by Ushijima has taken on the slogan of "Lite & Quick." By partnering with startups and engaging in collaborative efforts between NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation, which specializes in multi-vendor network construction, and NEC Nexsolutions, which possesses DX and IT service know-how primarily focused on mission-critical systems, NESIC Holdings will be able to provide end-to-end IT and network services with a "Lite & Quick" approach.

Ushijima explains, "NEC, NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation, and NEC Nexsolutions will now be able to provide a wide array of services by complementing one another in business domains they are unable to cover on their own. For example, if NEC Nexsolutions needs to deliver an industry-specific IT system to a customer as a package, NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation can provide the network and security technology required to run that package. Alternatively, all the necessary tasks can be undertaken collectively through business process outsourcing (BPO)."

Highlighting the importance of this, Ushijima adds, "If these three companies join forces, we should be able to expand the realm of solutions and services we are able to offer existing customers." According to Ushijima, this will also bring about cases in which services of both NEC and NESIC Holdings (those possessed by affiliated companies) can be provided to the same customer.

"For example, NEC would primarily be responsible for building mission-critical systems that utilize biometrics. Meanwhile, in so-called 'Lite & Quick' domains, where it is best to use cloud services for fast, low-cost introduction, NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation or NEC Nexsolutions would take charge. This should allow us to expand further the domains we can cover in the market as a whole," says Ushijima.

He then went on to express his hope that this will extend beyond existing customers, stating, "Since we will be increasing our sales resources by boosting efficiency, we should also be able to step up our activities to present proposals to new customers."

Merging businesses from NEC to support customers with our collective capabilities

In conjunction with the establishment of this new holding company, the SME business teams from NEC serving small and medium-sized enterprises as well as municipalities will be merged with NEC Nexsolutions. Plans are also slated for NEC's domestic fire and disaster prevention business team to merge with NEC Networks & System Integration Corporation in October 2025.

"The members of the teams merging with NEC Nexsolutions from NEC were already involved in similar domains. I am hopeful that a multitude of new synergies will be generated under this new holding company. In addition, with the merging of NEC's fire and disaster prevention business, we will become more powerful than ever before, outpacing competitors through excellence and attracting high expectations from our customers. Meanwhile, by leveraging one another's strengths and complementing each other, we will provide our customers with personalized services meeting their expectations," says Ushijima.

As for his future aspirations, Ushijima says, "As a system integrator, I would like to see us establish a dominant position in the industry."

"Among our competitors, some originated from the merging of IT and network companies. However, companies like ours that provide everything from construction to engineering are a rarity. Thanks to our collective capabilities, our customers have peace of mind knowing they can count on us to handle everything, giving us an advantage over others. I would like to see us establish a dominant position as a leading system integrator and set our sights on bumping our revenue, which currently totals 550 billion yen, up another digit."

Throughout the interview, Ushijima repeatedly emphasized the importance of rising to new challenges to support customer growth and create new value that underpins society's safety and security, concluding with these words: "I am determined to continue taking on challenges that cannot be accomplished within existing domains and organizations."
