NEC's face recognition technology wins the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister's Award at the 3rd Technology Management & Innovation Awards Ceremony

*** For immediate use February 2, 2015

Tokyo, February 2, 2015 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today its selection for the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister's Award, one of the highest recognitions at the 3rd Technology Management & Innovation Awards hosted by the Japan Techno-Economics Society (JATES). NEC received the award for its face recognition technology, which boasts the world's highest accuracy.

The Technology Management & Innovation Awards are a program that commends the creation of new business based on unique, voluntary research and development or open research and development, the creation of new business based on technologies developed through industry-academia collaborations, industry-academia-government collaborations, and industry-industry collaborations, or the standardization of such technologies, or the introduction and spread of open technologies which have contributed to economic growth, social change, increased competitiveness, and improved welfare.

The program also recognizes promoters of outstanding initiatives with unique innovation processes and the teams to which they belong.

Details of the award are as follows.

1. Project name:
Contributing to creating a safe, secure society with a face recognition technology boasting the world's highest accuracy

2. Award winners:
Hitoshi Imaoka, Research Fellow, Information and Media Processing Laboratories, NEC Corporation

Toshinori Hosoi, Chief, Information and Media Processing Laboratories, NEC Corporation

Masato Ishii, Information and Media Processing Laboratories, NEC Corporation

3. Outline:
Face recognition is a natural means of identifying individuals that people utilize on a daily basis. With conventional face recognition technologies, however, it is difficult to achieve sufficient accuracy because they are affected by differences in lighting and changes in faces due to aging. Having worked on the development of pattern recognition technologies for more than 50 years, NEC has succeeded in developing a highly accurate face recognition technology. Applying an algorithm that simulates human brain behavior, NEC's face recognition technology achieves a significantly low rate of recognition errors and reduces the problems and mistakes involved in matching*1, thereby reducing the efforts required to identify an individual.

"NEC's face recognition technology enables the instantaneous, accurate identification of individuals. As its effectiveness has been independently recognized, the solution is now used in more than 20 countries for immigration control systems, prevention of the unauthorized use of mobile devices, and other purposes. Face recognition is a groundbreaking method of identification. Unlike passwords, faces cannot be forgotten, lost, or stolen. It is expected that this technology will continue to be utilized in a growing range of situations in the future," said Hitoshi Imaoka, Research Fellow, Information and Media Processing Laboratories, NEC Corporation.
