UK-based publication Global Telecom Business recognizes Asia America Gateway with 'Most Innovative Project' award in 'International Fixed Network Infrastructure' category

September 18, 2007

Paris, September 18, 2007 ? The Asia America Gateway (AAG) submarine cable network received the Most Innovative Project award by the UK-based publication Global Telecom Business in a ceremony held in London on September 17, at the presence of representatives from Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company and Telecom Malaysia, Alcatel-Lucent and NEC. Other participants at the ceremony included AT&T and Telstra.

The AAG network is owned by a consortium formed by 10 parties including the Government of Brunei, AT&T (USA), Bharti (India), CAT (Thailand), PLDT (Philippines), PT Telkom (Indonesia), Telekom Malaysia (Malaysia), Telstra (Australia), StarHub (Singapore) and VNPT (Vietnam) owns the network. Providing full route diversity, AAG will be the first direct Terabit submarine cable network between Southeast Asia and the United States, spanning 20,000 km that is almost half the length of the equator. Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and NEC Corporation (NEC) (NASDAQ: NIPNY) will be jointly deploying this breakthrough submarine cable network.

Awards were presented to projects in 22 different categories in five broad groups: fixed network infrastructure innovation, wireless network infrastructure innovation, business and consumer service innovation, fixed/mobile convergence innovation.

"Throughout the world the industry is creating such a wave, such a flood of innovation, that is making a real difference to business, to our economy and to the way we live. Not only in the developed, industrially advanced world. The telecoms industry, our industry, is helping people become self-sufficient, helping them feed themselves and develop economically. We should all be proud of that,"said Alan Burkitt-Gray, Editor of Global Telecoms Business, in his speech at the Awards presentation.

"AAG will offer new, non-conventional route to support the delivery of broadband to all with the highest reliability for a top-quality end-user experience," said Jean Godeluck, President of Alcatel-Lucent's submarine network activity. "We are proud to be continuing our history of contribution to innovative projects."

"We are pleased to contribute in the deployment of this seamless direct connection that will address the increased connectivity and route needs among Southeast Asia and the U.S.," said Masamichi Imai, Executive General Manager of the Broadband Networks Operations Unit at NEC Corporation.
