NEC Signs US$ 800 million Contract for Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 Submarine Cable System

NEC Corporation (NEC) (NASDAQ: NIPNY) (FTSE: 6701q.l) announced that it will sign a contract worth approximatelyUS$800 million for the supply of a submarine cable system for the Asia-Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) project tomorrow. Once completed, this system will connect the Asia Pacific region with a bandwidth capacity of 2.56 terabits per second. This order represents the largest such project in the Asia Pacific region and is also the largest such order for NEC.

This cable project is spearheaded by 26 telecommunications companies namely Advantel, Cable & Wireless Global Network, Cable & Wireless HKTI, China Telecom, China Unicom, Chunghwa Telecom, Concert Global Network Services, Ltd., Global One, Japan Telecom, KDD Corporation, Korea Telecom, KPN, Layer2, MCI Worldcom, Metromedia Fiber Network Services, NTTCom, New Century InfoComm, Onelink Cable Network, PLDT, Starhub, SingTel, Taiwan Fixed Network, Teleglobe, Telekom Malaysia, Telestra and Williams Communications.

"NEC has proved that it is a world-leading integrator for the most technologically advanced and highly competitive turn-key systems", said an enthusiastic Dr. Mineo Sugiyama, Executive Vice President of NEC Corporation.

"The project is of very significant value to NEC" Sugiyama continued, "and we are honoured to sign a supply contract for such an important and significant leading edge project".

NEC Corporation has been supplying submarine cable systems for over 25 years. In fact, NEC has been involved in the majority of cable systems installed in the Asia Pacific region. In the Atlantic and Pacific region, the company has installed several transoceanic submarine cables with WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technologies, and NEC has also been involved in the construction of such massive projects as the China - US, Japan - US cable systems.

Scheduled to enter service in September 30, 2001.

China - US

Design capacity: 80 Gb/s
Overall length: 27,000 km
Principal consortium members include: Telstra(Australia), AT&T (USA), China Telecom, HKTI (Hong Kong), ITDC (Taiwan), Japan Telecom, KDD (Japan), Korea Telecom, MCII (USA), NTTCom (Japan), SBCI (USA), Singapore Telecom, Sprint (USA), Teleglobe (USA) and Telekom Malaysia. The China-US cable connects China, Korea, Japan, USA, Guam, Taiwan and, via connecting cable systems, into Asia (via SEA-ME-WE 3 and APCN) and Europe (via mainland USA). Entered service in January 2000.

Japan - US

Design capacity: 640 Gb/s
Overall length: 21,000 km
Principal consortium members include: AT&T (USA), BT (UK), C&W (UK), Japan Telecom, KDD (Japan), Level 3 (USA), NTTCom (Japan), PGE (USA), PSINet (USA), QWest (USA), SBCI (USA), Sprint (USA) and Worldcom (USA). The Japan-US cable will connect the USA, Hawaii, Japan and, via connecting cable systems, into Asia (via SEA-ME-WE 3 and APCN) and Europe (via mainland USA). Scheduled to enter service in mid-2000.
