NEC wins $55m NT Government end-user computing contract

*** For immediate use December 9, 2014

Tokyo and Melbourne, 9 December 2014 - NEC Corporation and NEC Australia, a leading IT solutions and services company, today announced that the Northern Territory (NT) Government has awarded NEC Australia with a multi-year end-user computing contract to support 20,000 end-users from the 'top end' to the 'red centre'.

The NT Government selected NEC Australia for its whole-of-government end-user computing contract, which has a total value of $55 million over an initial three-year period, with the option to extend the arrangement for a further two years.

NEC Australia will be supporting approximately 20,000 NT Government end-users at multiple agencies in all government offices except for schools, which are supported by NEC Australia in a separate contract with the NT Department of Education.

Under the new end-user computing contract, NEC Australia will provide on-site and remote support for all desktop, laptops, mobile devices, file and print services, email services, desktop application management and asset management.

NEC Australia's capabilities are enhanced by a growing number of strategic partnerships with NT-based ICT businesses that ensure government offices receive world class services and support across its large geographical footprint -- services which include fly-in and locally provisioned on-site support for offices in remote communities.

Key partners for the end-user computing contract include Vertical Technology Group, a Territory-based ICT provider with its own fleet of aircraft to deliver remote community services, staging services and technical courier services. To boost capabilities and responsiveness in Alice Springs, NEC Australia has also brought Red Centre Technology Partners onboard for on-site service delivery there. Additionally, NT Technology will deliver on-site services in Nhulunbuy and Katherine while Leading Edge will service Tennant Creek.

NEC Australia's multi-source approach ensures that the benefits of its contract flow directly back into the local economy through utilising local knowledge and expertise. Under this contract, approximately a third of its value will be transferred to local partners, in addition to providing new employment opportunities.

"Our integrated team of more than 220 employees in the Northern Territory makes NEC Australia the best positioned ICT services provider in Australia to help the NT Government overcome its unique ICT challenges. The NT Government has the added assurance that all services delivered and all decisions are made locally, leveraging NEC Australia and its partner network when the need arises," said Trevor Oliver, NEC Australia's manager for the Northern Territory.

"We've successfully delivered a number of services and key projects to the NT Government over the past decade and look forward to building on these successes in the future," he added.

Supporting local ICT businesses strengthens the value of NEC Australia's other investments in the Northern Territory, such as its partnership with the Department of Education through the NEC School-Based Apprenticeship and Indigenous Traineeship program, which links at least 20 local trainees with real jobs in the territory and provides work experience at NEC Australia.

The NT Government moves forward with the confidence that NEC Australia has exceeded key milestones in major ICT projects under its recently expired four-year desktop and servers contract. These include the deployment of 8,000 new desktops and laptops over two years and a government-wide Windows 7 upgrade in response to Microsoft's sunsetting support for Windows XP. With the support of NEC Australia, the NT Government migrated the fleet of its 16,500 workstations to Windows 7 within the schedule and budget.
