Calgary Police Service Selects NEC Biometric Solution NEC NeoFaceĀ® Facial Recognition is Tops in Comprehensive Open RFP Process

*** For immediate use November 3, 2014

Irving, Texas – November 3, 2014 – NEC Corporation of America (NEC), a leading provider and integrator of advanced IT, communications, managed services and biometric solutions, along with NEC Corporation, today announced that its NeoFace® Reveal facial recognition solution has been selected by the City of Calgary, Canada, and the Calgary Police Service (CPS). The Calgary Police Service awarded NEC the contract after a rigorous review process of facial recognition based criminal identification systems. This open (Request for Proposal) procurement for a facial recognition-based criminal identification system makes CPS the first law enforcement agency in Canada to obtain facial recognition.

"Facial recognition software is yet another tool for our investigators to assist in providing leads to identify potential persons of interest in criminal investigations," says Inspector Rosemary Hawkins, Calgary Police Service. "Similar to fingerprint and DNA evidence capture at scenes, facial recognition will create efficiencies by providing more viable leads for investigators."

Since the 1970s, NEC has invested significant resources in the research and development of core biometric identification technologies and has consistently achieved world-leading results in independent, third-party testing, proving NeoFace to be the most accurate facial recognition software available today. *1 Similar to a fingerprint latent capture and search subsystem, NeoFace Reveal will enable CPS to scan and enhance even poor quality latent facial images.

"We are looking forward to the opportunity to work with the Calgary Police Service and deliver the proven performance of our NeoFace solution," said Raffie Beroukhim, vice president, NEC Biometrics Solutions Division. "Our NeoFace Reveal system is an integral part of NEC's Safer Cities platform. *2 We are confident that our NeoFace solution will enable CPS to solve even more crimes in a timelier manner and better serve Calgary's public safety and security needs."

NeoFace Reveal leverages NEC's best-in-breed facial enhancement and matching technology for the processing and comparison of latent facial images. Images can be retrieved from either previously captured still photos or pre-recorded video streams and matched against a master facial image database for identification of individuals. NeoFace is highly scalable for large throughput volumes and is capable of integrating into existing operational and security processes.

*1 As independently verified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). These tests also demonstrated that NeoFace provides the fastest matching capability while remaining resistant to variations in angle, age, gender, and race.

*2 NEC's Safer Cities concept supports the growing Safety and Security vision to merge the traditional law enforcement areas of biometric-based identity management and forensic investigation with video surveillance, security access control, and disaster management.
