NEC Launches Enhanced iPASOLINK EX Radio Supporting Ultra High Speed Cloud RAN Fronthaul - Compact E-band radio enables ultra high speed transmissions for small cell backhaul, wireless fiber broadband extensions and CPRI for Cloud RAN -

*** For immediate use February 13, 2014

Tokyo, February 13, 2014 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) today launched its latest iPASOLINK EX, an all-outdoor, E-band radio unit now supporting higher capacity data transmissions for small cell backhaul aggregation and wireless extensions to fiber broadband networks. With the new addition of a Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI), iPASOLINK EX can now be used to provide wireless fronthaul in a Cloud RAN (C-RAN) environment.

The E-band millimeter wave spectrum offers higher data capacities and lower licensing costs than any other radio solution. This enables mobile operators to densify and extend their LTE macro networks with the addition of small cells to meet rising levels of mobile data demand in a quick and cost-effective way. It also provides the high data transmission speeds and capacity to connect baseband processors and Remote Radio Heads (RRH) wirelessly in a distributed RAN environment as a fronthaul connection using the CPRI version. Baseband processing can then be virtualized in server farms, enabling dynamic reallocation of processing resources, which helps to reduce infrastructure, site rental and energy costs.

Ichiro Kaneko, Senior Manager of NEC's Mobile Wireless Solutions Division, commented:  "NEC engineered iPASOLINK EX to provide an even higher level of upgradeable data capacity in a small, exceptionally reliable radio unit. With this latest product launch, NEC aims to continue to provide the most advanced and most comprehensive range of mobile backhaul and fronthaul solutions on the market."

NEC has already deployed over two million microwave transmission systems across 147 countries to support LTE, digital broadcast, Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA), 3G and other types of communication networks. NEC will showcase its latest iPASOLINK EX at Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona, Spain from February 24-27 at the Fira Gran Via, Hall 3, Stand 3N10.

Based on its Mid-term Management Plan 2015, the NEC Group is working towards the safety, security, efficiency and equality of society. Going forward, NEC aims to develop solutions for a wide range of social issues, as a company that creates value for society through the promotion of its "Solutions for Society," which provide advanced social infrastructure utilizing ICT.
