London & Tokyo, February 12, 2014 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today that Hrvatski Telekom (T-HT), Croatia's largest telecom operator, has selected NEC as the supplier of IPv6-capable home gateways for a "TeraStream" pilot network in Croatia. Connected with the pilot network, NEC's home gateways have started delivering triple play services – IPTV, VoIP and high speed Internet – to thousands of the operator's customers across Croatia.
T-HT and Deutsche Telekom AG jointly launched the TeraStream pilot network in Croatia in December 2012. TeraStream is the Deutsche Telekom group's industry-leading network concept. It aims to substantially reduce network and system complexity, improve operational efficiency, and enable new IP cloud-based telecommunications services in a fraction of the time typically required.
The embedded firmware and specific TeraStream functionalities on top of NEC's home gateway have been developed by T-HT and Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-Labs), the central research and development unit of the Deutsche Telekom group. With support from NEC, teams from Croatia, Germany and Japan were able to develop hardware and software to fit TeraStream requirements for fast IP access networks (1Gbit/s with support of jumbo frames 9 k Byte).
"We aim to deliver new services like cloud applications much faster and with the best quality to our customers," said Mr. Nenad Šlibar, Director of the Core Network Development Department and TeraStream project lead in Hrvatski Telekom. "Home gateways will play an integral part of the TeraStream project as it acts as the primal interface between our next generation services and end users. During the evaluation process NEC has proven itself as an innovative and customer-oriented partner, which resulted in its selection as our Home Gateways vendor."
"Transforming current network infrastructure into a flexible and agile service platform is a common challenge for telecom operators around the world. We are proud to be a part of T-HT's new strategic initiative," said Katsuhiro Ito, Vice President, Central Cluster, NEC Europe. "T-HT and NEC have been collaborating to bring innovative cloud services to the operator's business subscribers and, by leveraging our expertise in the cloud and other innovative network technologies such as Networking Functions Virtualization (NFV), we can further diversify our contribution to the TeraStream project."
