NEC establishes National ID Business Promotion Department to support business related to social security and taxes

Tokyo, January 29, 2014 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) has established a National ID Business Promotion Department in order to promote business related to the National ID System being established in Japan to support the implementation of social security and taxes.

The National ID System assigns an identification number to each citizen in order to integrate their social security and tax related information. Both central and local governments are scheduled to begin using the system in 2016.

This National ID System will serve as social infrastructure to increase the efficiency and transparency of the social security and tax systems, thereby improving convenience for citizens. It is expected to be used not only by central and local governments, but also by the private sector, including financial institutions and healthcare facilities.

The newly established National ID Business Promotion Department will initially consist of approximately 20 members. The team will develop cross-organizational strategies within the NEC Group and conduct sales promotion activities in response to a wide range of projects utilizing the National ID System. In addition to promoting National ID System business with central and local governments, the department will also seek new business in the private sector centered on the medical and financial markets.

Based on its Mid-term Management Plan 2015, the NEC Group is globally promoting "Solutions for Society" that aim to provide highly advanced social infrastructure using ICT. The newly established National ID Business Promotion Department forms a part of these solutions, and aims to contribute to the creation of new social infrastructure in Japan and the improvement of services in a wide range of fields.
