Tokyo, December 24, 2013 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) is taking part in the planning of a project to construct a disaster information and communications system at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Center) in the Republic of Indonesia. NEC has supplied ICT products, including IA Servers in the Express 5800 Series, storage systems in the iStorage Series, and network devices, in addition to managing system maintenance.
This system introduces ICT equipment at the AHA Center as well as disaster prevention centers in the ten ASEAN member countries in order to provide network connectivity between these countries. Boosting the network with these ICT products will facilitate seamless and swift transmission and sharing of disaster-related information between the AHA Center and members of ASEAN.
The AHA Center was established by ASEAN in November 2011 with the aim of promoting cooperation and coordination in the disaster prevention field within ASEAN.
The government of Japan has supported the AHA Center through its "Study on the Establishment and Operation of the AHA Center" (USD300,000), and by supporting the construction of ICT systems in accordance with "Phase 1 of the Construction of Integrated ICT Systems to Strengthen Operations at the AHA Center" (USD1.6 million).
Marking 40 years of friendship and cooperation between Japan and ASEAN, the government of Japan approved a donation of USD4,926,247 from the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) for "Phase 2 of the Construction of Integrated ICT Systems to Strengthen Operations at the AHA Center" (the Phase 2 Project) to boost the current system. Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications are collaborating participants.
The Phase 2 Project is expected to develop systems for swiftly processing and collecting information when ASEAN members request disaster support from the AHA Center. Moreover, training in the maintenance and operations of ICT systems will be provided to personnel at the AHA Center and at the disaster prevention centers in each ASEAN country.
NEC is committed to the ongoing development of social solutions and will continue to support the strengthening of disaster response capacity in the ASEAN region.
