NEC provides cloud-based Building Energy Management System (BEMS) compatible with equipment from a variety of vendors

*** For immediate use April 16, 2013

Tokyo, April 16, 2013 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) is providing a new cloud-based Building Energy Management System (BEMS) that supports the IEEE1888 international standard and enables the integrated management of sensors and facility systems from a variety of vendors. Sales are scheduled to first begin in APAC, China and Japan, then expand to additional regions.

This system consists of gateway software that converts the individual transmission methods for substation systems, air conditioning, lighting, sensor equipment and others into the IEEE1888 standard, Facility Information Access Protocol (FIAP) server software that enables the visualization and control of equipment's energy use, and the servers necessary for operating these components.

In recent years, global energy demand is rapidly increasing, particularly in Asia and emerging markets, where there are rising populations and growing consumption. The energy-related equipment for buildings and facilities throughout these markets is produced by a variety of vendors and the building management systems for managing and controlling this equipment is also provided by a range of different vendors.

Current BEMS carry out supervisory control for each building and facility using different communications systems, making it difficult to understand the total amount of energy being used by an area as well as the most efficient way to operate.

"This new system addresses many formerly troubling issues by enabling the cloud-based integrated management of energy for numerous buildings that utilize different sensors and facility systems," said Keisuke Yanagiya, senior manager, Smart City Business Development Department, NEC. "This easy-to-use energy analysis contributes to greater operational efficiency, reduced energy needs and lower management costs."

Primary features of this new system include the following:

  1. Connectivity with equipment from a variety of vendors. New visualization and control
This system enables energy visualization and control through a unified interface by converting the communications methods for equipment using a variety of standards into the same standard method of communication based on the IEEE1888 international standard. Moreover, supervisory control applies to the measurement control systems and sensor equipment for energy, such as electrical power, gas and water, enabling simultaneous management of 3,000 energy points under one system.

  2. Access a wide range of energy data through convenient terminals
Data collected from equipment is managed in a cloud environment through NEC data centers. As a result, data management can be performed using a personal computer or mobile phone, enabling users to conveniently compare graphical data or to program alarms without the need for additional staff or analysis tools.

  3. Enables energy management between multiple buildings
This new system enables the cloud-based unified management and control of the existing management systems for different buildings, thereby allowing data to be easily compared between buildings and contributing to optimized building management and operation.

NEC showcases this system at Power & Electricity World Asia 2013, 15 - 18 April 2013 at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre, Singapore.

NEC globally promotes energy storage systems, energy management systems, charging infrastructure for Electric Vehicles (EV) / Plug-in-Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) and smart energy business linked with Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Going forward, NEC aims to contribute to the realization of smart houses, smart cities and other intelligent technologies for saving and applying energy.
