The NEC Storage NAS Basic Software offers highly sophisticated and optimized file systems together with various network protocols such as NFS, CIFS, and NDMP.
The snapshot function is used for storing a snapshot picture of a file system status at a certain point in time. By acquiring a static snapshot status of a file system, data backup operation is enabled maintaining consistency between file systems while interruptions to file server operation can be avoided.
Multiple snapshot points of a file system can be recorded; by storing previous generation snapshots, the file system can be restored from any of the recorded snapshot generations in case the file system is erroneously updated. Each file is controlled in divided blocks of specific size. Internal to the file system is a mechanism to create copies of the blocks updated or generated after a snapshot is taken. Because only updated blocks are copied, taking a snapshot will not result in doubling the requirements for the file system capacity.
In order to efficiently utilize limited resources, limitations can be applied for resources (volume of files and number of files) to be available for individual users.
Volume of files and number of files are controlled for individuals or groups by specifying respective limitations.
Part of the main memory is protected by battery backup. This assures that the main memory can store the request data for which a response has been made. In addition, use of the journal file system realizes fast system recovery.
The replication function creates data copies (replicas) on a remote NEC Storage NV Series system without requiring interruption of system operation. This function enables users to refer to a replicated file system image, which is equivalent to the original one, available on a remote NEC Storage NV Series system. By utilizing this function, a disaster recovery system can be implemented.
For more details on the replication system, refer to the "Replication" section.
The LVM (Logical Volume Manager) function is provided for logical volume management. The LVM formulates and controls a "logical volume" of memory area to combine multiple disk volumes (block devices) that are not physically continuous.
The NFS (Network File System) is a protocol to provide network file access for NFS clients. Client users who are allowed to access files can mount the NEC Storage NV Series file system on their individual file systems for reading and writing files. The following versions of the NFS protocol are supported:
The NFS protocol also supports the "MOUNT" protocol to be used for file system mounting, the NLM (Network Lock Manager) protocol to lock files, and the NSM (Network Status Monitor) protocol to report loss of lock due to crashes or re-booting.
The CIFS (Common Internet File System) protocol provides network file services within a Windows environment. This software supports access from client hosts with Windows 95/98/Me or Windows NT(V.3.51 or later)/2000/XP operation systems.
This software also supports the TCP/IP protocol as the transport layer protocol.

The following network protocol can be used for accessing the files that have been placed on an NEC Storage NV Series system by using the NFS or CIFS protocol.
Link to other functions of NEC Storage NAS Basic Software
NEC Storage NAS Basic Software supports the TCP/IP protocol, which is the Internet standard protocol, and the Gigabit Ethernet interface including TOE functions. Other network control functions such as TOE control and link aggregation functions are also offered.
Secure operation can be maintained by limiting accesses from NFS/CIFS clients or network administrators in different authentication levels.
Various kinds of functions such as cluster configuration functions are supported in order to improve operational availability.
