The history of Submarine Telecommunications has come a long way, and it all started in 1858, before the "Telephone" was invented, with the first trans-Atlantic telegraph cable.
However, inter-continental submarine cables used for voice application had to wait another 98 years until 1956, when the first trans-Atlantic Coaxial cable was laid and became operational.
NEC has been a manufacturer of Submarine Telecommunications systems from the very early stages. In 1968, we started the first production of Coaxial Repeaters for Submarine applications. Since then, we have kept on supplying the latest, state of the art Submarine Systems to our customers worldwide.
In 1985, the Coaxial systems went obsolete with the introduction of the Optical systems. NEC was quick in shifting its resources from Coaxial to "Optical", and led the industry to the world of "Optical Submarine Applications". However, the regenerating technology at that time was still electrical, and could only regenerate a single wavelength per optical fiber. The DWDM's had to wait until 1994, when the regenerating technology made a major breakthrough by becoming "Optical".
The year 2000 has become a year to remember for NEC's Submarine Systems. This year, we received a Contract to implement the Asia Pacific Cable 2 system, the Australia-Japan Cable System and the East Asia Crossing Phase-2 Cable System, marking the recognition NEC has received not only as an equipment manufacturer, but as a "System Integrator".
