1. Software introduction
This system BIOS (PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0.0020) is programmed to handle the
Intel Xeon Processor D1 Step under the NEC Express5800/120Ef systems.
<Notes>
Incorrect update operations may cause a system start failure. Read this
explanation thoroughly, until fully understanding the correct system update
procedures. If an unexpected problem arises (e.g., power failure, lightning,
shutdown, or noise) during the data rewrite process, a system malfunction or
the power supply loss may occur, resulting in equipment damaged, which may
cause the equipment to fail or operate incorrectly. In such a case, repair
expenses may be charged to the customer.

Notes: If the BIOS version of the present system is newer than the above stated
revision, the system does not require a BIOS update. Functions equivalent to
those of this BIOS update will already have been applied.
Be certain to confirm the BIOS version of your system.
BIOS confirmation procedures:
(1) Power on the machine.
(2) When the following message appears, press the F2 key to start the BIOS
Setup Menu.
* If the NEC logo appears on the screen, press the ESC key.
* So the following message appears, press the F2 key to start the
* BIOS Setup Menu.
"Press <F2> to enter SETUP"
(3) The BIOS version of your system will be displayed in the following "XXXX".
[Main] -> BIOS Version: Rel.6.0.XXXX

(4) Move the cursor to [Exit], using the arrow keys.
(5) Select [Exit Discarding Changes], and exit the BIOS Setup Menu.
(*) Refer to the User's Guide for details on BIOS Setup.
In cases when the machine is already installed with Windows 2000, the following
procedures may be taken in order to confirm the BIOS version. BIOS Confirmation
procedures under Windows 2000:
(1) Start "Computer Management".
(Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer
Management)
(2) Select System Tools -> System Information -> System Summary.
(3) Confirm the BIOS Version.
If the BIOS Version is newer than PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0.0020, there
is no need to update the system. Functions equivalent to those of this BIOS
update will already have been applied to the system.
3. Installation procedures
[What you must prepare]
Prepare the "NEC EXPRESSBUILDER" CD-ROM supplied with the machine.
[BIOS update procedure]
The setup information on BIOS is not backed up by this operation. Backup the
setup information on BIOS using offline utility including NEC EXPRESSBUILDER.
Take the following procedure to update the old system BIOS with the"BIOS update
data" floppy disk.
(1) Insert the NEC EXPRESSBUILDER CD-ROM into the CD-ROM disk drive of the
basic processing unit.
(2) Boot the basic processing unit from the CD-ROM.
(3) Select [Tools] from the Main Menu.
(4) Select [BIOS/FW/etc. Update] from the Menu.
(5) When the following message is displayed, insert the "BIOS update data"
floppy disk into the floppy disk drive of the basic processing unit, and
then press the Enter key.
[BIOS/FW/etc. Update]
Please insert the floppy disk which contains
"update module" into the drive.
Execute:[Enter] Stop:[Esc]
(6) When the following message is displayed, press the Enter key.
[BIOS Update]
The files needed for the update will be
copied from the CD-ROM to the floppy disk.
Execute:[Enter] Stop:[Esc]
(7) When the following message is displayed, the files required for the BIOS
update will be copied to the floppy disk. Please wait a moment
(about 2 minutes).
[BIOS Update]
Now, copying the files needed for
BIOS Update to the floppy disk.
Please wait a moment.
(8) When the following message is displayed, remove the "NEC EXPRESSBUILDER"
CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive of the basic processing unit, and then press
the Enter Key.
[BIOS Update]
Please remove the CD-ROM.
But don't remove the floppy disk.

If you select 'Execute', system will be
rebooted automatically.
And then update procedure will be executed
from the floppy disk.
Execute:[Enter] Stop:[Esc]
(9) Leave the "BIOS update data" floppy disk in the floppy disk drive of the
basic processing unit, and allow the system to boot from the floppy disk
drive.
The following message will appear when the system is started from the
"BIOS pdate data" floppy disk:

(10) The BIOS update tool will automatically be run.
The update process will take approximately 4 to 5 minutes. DO NOT power
off the system during this update process.
The following message will appear when the update process has finished.
Flash memory has been successfully programmed
PRESS ANY KEY TO RESTART THE SYSTEM
If the system does not restart,
TURN THE POWER OFF, THEN ON
(11) Press the Enter key to reboot the system.
(12) Boot the system from the floppy disk drive of the basic processing unit.
The Update operation will be complete when the following message is
displayed:

ROM File BIOS Version: 6.0.yyyy
BIOS update has already done.
Please take out BIOS update media and reboot.
(13) Remove the floppy disk from the floppy disk drive according to the
instructions displayed on the screen, and then restart the system.
(14) Press the F2 key during boot, and start the BIOS Setup Menu. Confirm that
the BIOS version has been updated to the following:
[Main] -> BIOS Version: Rel.6.0.XXXX
(15) Move the cursor to [Exit], using the arrow keys.
(16) Select [Load Setup Defaults], and clear the BIOS Setup Menu.
(17) Select [Exit Saving Changes], and exit the BIOS Setup Menu.
(*) Setup information on BIOS is default configuration. Reconfiguration is
necessary as needed.
This completes the System BIOS update process.
4. Notes
(1) The device boot order may have been changed depending on the machine's
operating environment. In this case, the boot sequence must be changed to
the order as shown below.
1. CD-ROM
2. Floppy disk drive
Refer to the User's Guide for the procedure on changing the boot device
start order.
(2) When the basic processing unit is started, only the NEC logo with blue on white
background may be displayed depending on the supported features of the basic
processing unit and settings that you performed.
In this case, press the <ESC> key while the NEC logo screen is
displayed.
So the following message appears, press the F2 key to start the BIOS Setup
Menu.
"Press <F2> to enter SETUP"
(3) The BIOS update data of this system does not support the system BIOS update
using the remote console.
(4) If the BIOS update tool does not automatically start as described in
"3-2. BIOS update procedure", a message may appear indicating the reason
why the tool has not started:
(a)BIOS Update has already done.
Please take out BIOS update media and reboot.
The BIOS version of the current system is the same as the update version, and
does not require updating.
(b)This BIOS is NEW. Don't need BIOS update.
The BIOS version of the current system is newer than the update version,
and the functions equivalent to those included in the update have
already been applied to the system, and does not require updating.
(c)System Type Unmatched !!
This message will appear when attempts are made to apply the BIOS update
to inapplicable models.
Confirm "Models" and "BIOS versions" in "2. Applicable models".
(d)"Invalid BIOS data" or "BIOS data unmatched!!"
Either of these messages will appear when the data contained in the
"BIOS update data" floppy disk is invalid. Be certain to use "BIOS
update data" floppy disks that are free from defects.
