Tracking and managing of passengers realized with NEC's latest RFID technology. [ 04:13 ]
Singapore – one of the busiest seaports in Southeast Asia – is also a major hub for passengers traveling by sea. Every year more than 6 million passengers pass through ferry terminals managed by the Singapore Cruise Centre Or SCC, to outlying islands as far as Malaysia and Indonesia.
However with the increase in passenger traffic over the years, SCC was faced with the growing challenge of how to track passengers and their baggage in real-time. As part of their USD3 million dollar refurbishment, SCC decided it needed to upgrade by replacing the inefficient and wasteful paper ticketing system.
NEC SINGAPORE:
After the 9/11 problem Singapore cruise centre face a serious problem to identify the customer within the short period. Also the customer would like to decide the partner to improve their operation with using a new ferry terminal.
Together with SCC, NEC met this challenge by designing a unique custom-made passenger traffic solution which would entirely transform the way information on passengers would be tracked and managed, from the time they check in, to the time they depart for their destination.
At the core of this system is the electronic boarding pass – the first of its kind to be introduced in Asia.
A chip utilizing NEC's latest Radio Frequency Identification or RFID technology is embedded into a reusable boarding pass which would transmit real-time information at several key checkpoints as a passenger moves through the terminal.
At the check-in counter passengers confirm their name and passport number which is then encoded onto the boarding pass.
That same pass is then used again to check in and track the passenger’s luggage.
At each and every checkpoint, the passenger swipes his pass on the electronic monitor which transmits information to the Cruise Center in real-time:
At immigration…
In the Departure area..
Even when they board the ferry…

This memory card also has a chip embedded inside that has the capacity to contain all the passengers particulars that’s needed in our business.
The RFID technology is a paradigm shift in passenger tracking. Ferries can depart on time knowing everyone is on board, has securely passed immigration and that no luggage has been left behind.
For the Singapore Cruise Center, the process has cut down on manpower requirements and even has an environmental benefit - instead of the usual paper passes, the electronic boarding pass can be used numerous times.
SINGAPORE CRUISE CENTER Cheong Teow Cheng :
In terms of benefits It has save us manpower and we are more efficient in that ah when we process a voyage we can do it faster with lesser human intervention. That all adds up to some cost savings.
For the thousands of passengers using NEC’s RFID solution, life has become that much more comfortable and convenient as they head off to a hassle-free delightful holiday!
NEC SINGAPORE:
We expected a lot of opportunity we do with this experience. For example Singapore cruise center itself is already looking for another opportunity, similar operations in another country. Therefore, we try to collaborate with the Singapore cruise center to secure such kind of opportunity.
