NEC's corporate R&D is carried out by NEC's R&D Unit and has a dual role: the introduction of cutting-edge research results into the product development cycle, and the creation of new technologies for the future. NEC's laboratories operate at a global level, with sites throughout the world.
In Europe we have two research laboratories, the Network Research Division in Heidelberg and the IT Research Division in Sankt Augustin, Germany. Both laboratories are part of the NEC Laboratories Europe. Research and development functions are integrated into the same organization to shorten the time to market of cutting-edge network technologies. The laboratories place special emphasis on solutions meeting the needs of NEC's European customers.
Our continual challenge is to accelerate the exploitation of research results in NEC's communication products and to strengthen NEC's European business through joint work with current and future NEC customers.
NEC actively contributes to collaborative research projects, such as "FleetNet - Internet on the Road" (2000-2003) and currently "NoW - Network on Wheels" (2004-2008) that has been partially funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).
NEC has joined forces with automobile manufacturers, industrial partners and universities to develop communication technologies that improve road traffic safety based on inter-vehicle communication. As automotive industry supplier and systems provider, NEC has been working for over five years on technologies that enable inter-vehicle and car-to-roadside communication. From a technical viewpoint, NEC's research and development efforts focus on the development of communication protocols for ad-hoc networks, the use of wireless LAN technology (WLAN IEEE 802.11 standards), and Internet integration.
Standardisation is necessary so that vehicles from different car manufacturers can communicate with each other. In order to achieve a joint standard for inter-vehicle communication, NEC is member of the C2CC - Car-to-Car Communication consortium, and it is working in close collaboration with BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Volkswagen, and other automobile manufacturers. The objective is to establish an open industrial standard for 'Internet vehicle communication with WLAN components' and to ensure pan-European interoperability. The first products are expected after 2008, when the standard is in place, and they are likely to be launched on the market sometime between 2009 and 2012.
