Tokyo, December 25, 2012 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the establishment of a branch office in Yangon, Myanmar, aiming to develop the country's information and communications technology (ICT) and social infrastructure. The new office is scheduled to begin operations in January 2013.
Recently, Myanmar's unique geography, abundance of natural resources and movement towards democracy are attracting the attention of businesses throughout the world. In order to support the rapid economic growth that is expected in the future, the country is deeply in need of infrastructure improvement, where reports indicate that just 3% of the nation's roughly 62 million people subscribe to fixed or mobile telephone lines. By 2015, the government aims to increase this figure to as high as 50%, which is also expected to drive improvements in the banking and IT systems.
"NEC has been contributing to Myanmar's communications infrastructure for 35 years through the provision of telephone switchboards, wireless equipment, satellite ground stations and broadcasting systems," says Shin Sakamoto, general manager, Greater China and Asia Pacific Sales Division, NEC Corporation. "In the future, NEC aims to continue responding to local needs and strengthening regional business through the provision of international communication networks such as submarine cable systems, ICT infrastructure for industrial parks, disaster prevention systems, security systems, e-government systems and mass-market products such as servers."
Going forward, NEC also plans to open a branch office in the city of Naypyidaw as part of its ongoing contributions to the development of Myanmar's ICT technologies.
