NEC conducts HEMS trial in Sweden with the Luleå University of Technology and Skellefteå Kraft

*** For immediate use December 20, 2012

Skellefteå, Sweden, December 20, 2012 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) began trials of a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) in partnership with the Luleå University of Technology's (LTU) Centre of Distance-spanning Technology (CDT) and Skellefteå Kraft, a leading Swedish power company, as part of Skellefteå city's "Sense Smart City Project" (*).

The trial will measure the overall power consumed by a number of individual households and selected appliances until May 2013 in Skellefteå city. NEC is providing its intelligent home gateway for collecting power consumption information, its user interface for visualization and its Android tablet, the "Cloud Communicator LT-B."

One of the main goals of the trial is to measure the effects that visualization of energy consumption has on tenants and how to improve and maintain their motivation to conserve energy. NEC's web based application supports this goal.

"This is a fantastic project that gives the citizens of Skellefteå the opportunity to experience the positive impact of saving energy in their homes and to ultimately contribute to a more energy and environmentally friendly society," said Fredrik Tumegård, president & CEO, NEC Scandinavia AB. "The project also signifies the economic commitment to Northern Sweden and the importance of future developments in the energy sector by the organizations involved."

NEC will leverage the technological and sociological experiences gained from this trial in order to promote its Smart City vision and to provide a variety of services and applications for a wide range of business fields. The data collected and the effects of its web based application on the energy consumption behavior of participating households is scheduled to be analyzed and taken into consideration for future cooperative business opportunities with the local government and Skellefteå Kraft.
