Japan's first satellite, Ohsumi, was successfully launched in 1970. NEC promoted the development of the satellite as a leader of the development team. Since then, NEC has led numerous satellite development projects and is developing a number of satellites - 61 in total (as of 2007) - including communications, broadcast, weather, Earth observation, astronomical and scientific observation, and engineering test satellites.
NEC’s share of the domestic satellite market is over 60 percent.
