Growing network infrastructure in Taiwan

Seven decades of promoting growth in Taiwan's economy and network infrastructure have given NEC deep roots in the domestic market. Starting with radio transmitters in 1940, we've provided Taiwan with successive generations of network equipment, including exchange switches for fiber transmission, computer systems, electronic devices and components. NEC established its first overseas manufacturing affiliate with Tatung in 1958, and created NEC Taiwan as its sales affiliate in 1982.

Key Player in M-Taiwan project

Now Taiwan has launched an ambitious national project called M-Taiwan, which aims to promote prosperity by establishing a ubiquitous, networked information society. Major aims of the project include using wireless broadband application technology to upgrade IT infrastructure, and culitivating domestic WiMAXindustries.

Agreements signed in early 2007 call for NEC to play a major role in M-Taiwan. We'll provide a full line-up of products and services for broadband access and transport. We're also committed to cooperating with local hardware/software industries in development of WiMAX products and applications.

Successful Trials in Hualien

Hualien city, in eastern Taiwan, is building a WiMAX-based system to promote tourism and upgrade medical services. NEC and Tatung cooperated on trials that successfully verified system performance. In the trial, NEC's WiMAX system demonstrated Internet access and video streaming at 6 Mbps throughput per user. The system also achieved smooth handover between base stations, and stable in-vehicle access. All of the Customer Premise Equipment used in the trial was Taiwan-made. As a result of the successful trial, Tatung acquired an official WiMAX business license.

NEC will install commercial systems in Hualien. They will be ready for market in 2007 and will be fully compliant with the WiMAX Forum Wave-2 System Profile. Most of the major functionality, including simple mobility, MIMO and AMC, "Adaptive Modulation & Coding", will be fully supported by NEC's WiMAX technology. Next year, NEC will add Full Mobility to the system. Our development plans extend beyond infrastructure to include Subscriber Stations. Customer Premise Equipment, radio modules for gaming and in-vehicle use, home facilities, and PDAs.

Mobile WiMAX Research Center to Serve Global Market

An key element of NEC's global WiMAX strategy is the creation of a state-of-the-art mobile WiMAX research center in Taiwan. According to a Memorandum of Understanding with the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs, NEC will open the "Multimedia E2E R&D Center" in Taipei in 2007 as part of the M-Taiwan project.

The怀new center will support local hardware, software and service providers by enabling them to conduct inter-operability tests and verify application services. Feedback from demonstrations will facilitate further WiMAX innovation.

By leveraging its achievements in Taiwan and its global leadership in IT & Networking, NEC plans to drive the worldwide expansion of WiMAX services.
