Case Study for Inventory Tracking System: IT Peripheral Vendor

Reduced the time required for sales staff to perform inventory counting and reporting and eliminated the need to manually compile gathered information.

Challenges

  • The IT peripheral vendor needed to compensate for differences in distributors, dealers and resellers based on the number IT peripherals when they announce a price drop.
  • Different models carry a different compensation figure and the total compensation is based on the quantity of peripherals on hand.
  • In order to correctly ascertain the amount of stock, sales staff must visit distributors, dealers and resellers to count the stock manually.
  • Sales staff must prepare inventory reports for each item and submit them to headquarters for compilation.

Solution

  • In order to eliminate manual work, NEC provided a handheld terminal that scans the model number and serial number, and sends the collected information to a server.
  • To compile the information effectively, NEC also provided a web application for gathering data from sales staff.
  • Users of the handheld terminal can access the web application online anywhere, anytime. When accessing the web application, users can synchronize the data with the server via the Internet.

Results

  • By using a handheld terminal, sales staff no longer have to perform manual stock-counting; they can just scan the model number and serial number, minimizing human error.
  • Marketing staff are able to compile the data provided by sales staff faster by utilizing the web application.
  • After implementing this system, the lead time for stock counting and compiling data was significantly reduced.
