Quantum Computer

Dr. Tsai & Mr. Nakamura

To find the prime factors of a 300-digit number, even a supercomputer would need about 10 million years. For a quantum computer, this task would take only several tens of seconds.

In October of 2003, NEC and RIKEN (Institute of Physical and Chemical Research) announced their demonstration of a basic circuit making up a quantum computer in the British scientific journal Nature (October 30, 2003, Vol. 425: "Demonstration of conditional gate operation using superconducting charge qubits"). --> Press Release, Oct. 30, 2003

In this report, research fellow Jaw-Shen Tsai and research fellow Yasunobu Nakamura of NEC's Green Innovation Research Laboratories describe the potential of quantum computers and the basic principals behind their operation.
