RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is one of the automatic identification technologies that read and record data by utilizing electromagnetic induction and radio wave.
Since a few years ago, demonstration experiments and trials utilizing RFID tag have been done in many industries and recently deployment has started for production usage. Decreasing price of RFID tag accelerates the trend. For supply chain management in logistics and distribution fields, such as historical data management of food distribution and processing and information management of book stock circulation, RFID is already utilized in many systems. RFID is also utilized in the contactless IC smart card used as ticket and commuter pass in the transportation industry.
However, RFID tags are manufactured by many vendors in different shape, size, and frequency band. Moreover, reader and writer for reading/writing information from / to the RFID tag also have several variations. In most systems, they are mixed. So, RFID equipment differences have to be considered.
To resolve such situation, NEC RFID middleware provides a common abstraction over the differences in RFID equipments from various vendors.
For instance, RFID middleware provides common interface. By using this interface, applications do not need to implement RFID equipment specific code. In addition, development cost can be considerably reduced because application development for new RFID equipment introduction is no longer required.

Two APIs are provided: one is unique to WebOTX RFID Manager and the other complies with the EPCglobal ALE (Application Level Events) 1.0 specification. ALE is a specification to define an interface for achieving the functionality to filter or group data read by multiple readers and report only data required for upper-level software.
