Collaboration with Sony Corporation

Connectivity between Sony's enterprise tape library the "PetaSite S series" or hierarchical storage management (HSM) software "PetaServe products" and the "NEC Storage S series" or "NEC Storage NV series" will be tested, and at the same time, a high-speed archive backup system for large volumes of data based on the combination of Sony and NEC products will be developed and tested.

About the archiving system

Archiving system

With the increase in data volume, demand for inexpensive creation of large-capacity storage has intensified. The conventional disk array storage unit, however, requires a large amount of investment although high-speed access is possible. The ratio of data that must be accessed on an on-demand basis is said to be 1/3 of the total volume of data, and access frequency is not very high for other files.

Therefore, we will combine SAN/NAS, tapes, and HSM software that NEC and Sony have developed to provide an archiving system that can realize seamless, large-volume, high-speed storage for a market that requires the use of large volume files such as image files.

Application examples

Application example 1

IP monitoring and archiving systemIP monitoring and archiving system

With the recent increase in heinous crimes, the establishment of safety measures is becoming an important task. Banks for example have unattended ATM branches for 24/7 services and surveillance cameras are required items at each branch. Also, with the spread of broadband, the storage of monitored image data at remote locations at low cost has become possible. Although images captured by surveillance cameras are never reviewed unless there are problems, it is still desirable that the images be captured and stored in case of emergency.

For this reason, in the case of 10 branches with 5 cameras each, this archiving system can take advantage of tapes and disks to store one-year's worth of data (100 TB) at high speed and low cost.

In the field of medical practice, too, demand for a large-volume video data archive has been increasing. In response to this, in our archiving system, image files are stored in hierarchical storage to be used for restoration after disasters, backups of file copies are created on inexpensive tapes, and backups can be stored at a remote location via VPN. Furthermore, there has been demand for solutions that can prevent falsification as a result of computerized medical charts. By using the S-AIT write-once solution together with the archiving system, it is possible to realize the consolidation of all medical data.

Simply by connecting PetaSite to a SAN, it becomes possible to execute LAN free backup of multiple platforms. Also, it is possible to execute direct backup using NDMP.

High-speed backup system (image)

High-speed backup system

A high-speed tape library device is a system that combines a disk array device and a tape library, and virtualizes this as a tape.

For example, when a disk array device whose price is half that of a tape library device is introduced, the backup and restoration speed of that disk array is more than twice as fast as a tape library device having the same capacity (ATA HDD: twice as fast, fiber channel HDD: four times as fast).

Due to the increase in data volume in recent years, the market demands that backup creation and restoration be fast. Recently, a disk-based backup system (VTL: Virtual Tape Library) focusing on improvement of the data access performance was released. However, since VTL is based on a disk device, its capacity is limited and it also has poor scalability, and in addition, it cannot make backup media go offline. Therefore, from the disaster recovery perspective, the same backup system must be installed at a remote site via WAN, and this will be costly. In response to this, by taking advantage of the features of Sony and NEC products, and by combining disk arrays and tapes, a hybrid backup system with high portability and scalability that allows inexpensive high-speed access is provided.
