Dr. Value's Storage Lecture Program

3rd session NEC Storage NV 7200G and NEC Storage NV5200
Improving operational efficiency through storage integration the era of the SAN/NAS integration environment is coming

Business environments continue to change rapidly.

The volume of data that companies manage has been increasing, and not only improvement of data management and operation efficiency, but also reduction of operation costs in response to recent management environments have become company tasks.

In this session, Dr. Value will introduce the NAS products of the NEC Storage series, NAS gateway NV7200G, and NV5200 with high cost performance, that can create a SAN/NAS integrated environment for efficient and inexpensive management and operation of data.

About Dr. Value

Dr. Value works at NEC Storage Solutions Center.

He manages over 20 systems and has promoted IT at many companies (in the fields of finance, communications, and so forth). Currently, he is solving a large number of computerization-related problems.

Improvement of operational efficiency through effective use of SAN and NAS features

As its name suggests, a SAN (Storage Area Network) differs from a LAN (Local Area Network) and is dedicated for connecting storage units or tape library devices to servers. SAN is characterized by high-speed data transmission/reception via fiber channels. Although SAN has advantages such as storage integration, storage sharing among servers of different models, and improvement of storage management efficiency, it cannot be used for file sharing. Therefore, I assume that there are many companies that are planning to use file servers on LAN connections to introduce a data management and sharing mechanism.

You want to use file servers while making use of a SAN environment, but…

It takes time and effort to construct new file servers.
Also, you have to maintain security patches by yourself when using file servers on a generalpurpose OS, and therefore, it is difficult to operate and it requires large costs.

Dr. Value

It is the recently popular "SAN and NAS integration" that can solve these problems. If files can be shared among servers and clients and if it is possible to share the advantages of NAS and SAN such as dynamic capacity expansion without changing any settings, storage environment management can be integrated and generate the following benefits.

If a SAN/NAS integrated environment can be established …

It is possible to effectively use resources through SAN/NAS integrated backups Operational efficiency can be improved through integrated capacity management Disaster prevention measures can be created in the same environment as that of SAN's

Effective use of resources through SAN/NAS integrated backups

If a SAN/NAS integrated environment can be established, data on NAS can use SAN's wide bandwidth to create high-speed backup. If backups can be made in the same environment, loads due to operation and management can be reduced, and also resources can be used effectively.

Improvement of operational efficiency through integrated capacity management

If resources can be shared in the SAN/NAS integrated environment, it is possible to efficiently allocate disk capacities for data saving and as a result, it is possible to reduce the total required volume. Also, responses to increase/decrease volume can be flexible.

The same disaster prevention measures as SAN can be created

The term "disaster prevention measures" that we have heard a lot about recently means the protection of data, which is an important asset of companies, and for them, this must be one of the most important tasks. Even when servers physically collapse, operations can be resumed immediately if data is replicated in a remote chassis. Such a measure is required for companies so that they can ensure their credibility. In a SAN/NAS integrated environment, preventive measures can be created in the same environment as SAN's, and operation and management loads can thus be reduced.

As described above, the realization of a SAN/NAS integrated environment generates a large number of benefits. The introduction of a NAS gateway can also greatly reduce loads on administrators when compared to the case where new file servers are constructed and operated.

Dr.Value

It is the NEC Storage NAS gateway "NV7200G" that can realize SAN/NAS integration.
