Experience, Knowledge & Capabilities

NEC Consortium

We have been providing tools for adapting NEC product developments for over 20 years for PCs, mobile phones, transmission devices, among others.
EMIStream was created through these products developments experience.
This tool has cultivated know-how through actual experience and research results by NEC laboratories.
This is a great tool for art work designers and EMC experts who have been struggling against EMI problems and often work overnight in the chamber.

EMIStream Was Provided From Real World PCB Design Field

When people started to use Intel Pentium, many EMI problems occurred at NEC.
At that time, we provided a prototype device and tested it in the chamber to verify the problem and execute countermeasures.

As a result, after providing a prototype and measurement, we had to reroute wires, replace components locations, and sometimes even go back to the schematic design phase due to components changes and additions.

By doing this iteration process, product development consumed a lot of work hours.
In fact, device designers were responsible for all EMI issues in NEC, and when EMC problems occurred on prototype PCBs, they sometimes had to spend sleepless nights in the chamber to investigate EMI sources and fix the problems.

At the time, NEC had already succeeded with Signal Integrity analysis.
Determining trace length and wire routing before designs could help to reduce SI problems at the design stage.

Reduction of PWB development cost

The example above is one before and after success story using SI tool at NEC.
This comparison shows the design term and cost difference in a PC motherboard development.

In the left figure, design term after using SI simulation shows a dramatic 30% reduction.
On the right figure after using SI simulation 15% of development cost were saved.
Although design cost increased minimally from 41% to 44% rework cost was reduced from 59% to 40%.
You can reduce total design cost successfully by SI simulation.

To solve EMI problems like SI tool, NEC Group established an internal consortium which was run by several design divisions such as PC, workstation, transmission equipment developers and laboratories researchers and we began sharing each division’s know-how and technical researches.

In this consortium, we evaluated EMC simulator in the market.

What required for the solution?

What required for the solution?

We faced difficulty with the following

  • Gathering libraries
  • Requiring a high skill level of operation
  • Long simulation hours
  • Knowledge of all circuit operation

EMC simulator was a very good tool. However, when we focused on saving time and cost, while only relying on simulators, although did not give enough solutions on-site it was too time consuming and costly for the real world design phase.
From these experiences, we decided to provide our own tool that was easy to operate with a quick answer whether the design was acceptable or not.
So the EMIStream concept was born and development began by NIS.
Now there was an answer to the real world PCB design.
