NEC's image recognition technology plays a major role in biometric authentication where a high level of accuracy is required.

NEC's face recognition technology was ranked number 1 in a challenge carried out by a US government institution.
It's presently employed in over 20 countries worldwide.

For example, it's used at border control between mainland China and Hong Kong for personal verification. It's also used as part of the entrance system for annual studio pass holders at Universal Studios Japan®.

Facial images for verification must first be enrolled into the database.

Even a disguised image and a photograph from 10 years ago can be recognized accurately.

NEC's face recognition technology was ranked number 1 in a challenge carried out by a US government institution.

First, the face is detected from the image. The white dotted lined areas are the candidate areas, and the most face-like area is detected. The facial parts are also searched to recognize the precise face position.

Next, facial features are extracted from the detected face, using the area which is less subject to facial expressions or aging.

Finally, the facial features are matched against the registered features in the database.
