Efforts to reduce environmental impact by alleviating traffic jams have resulted in the growing popularity of several in-car systems, such as the road vehicle communication (RVC) system, which manages entering and exiting gas stations and parking facilities and paying related fees, and the inter-vehicle communication (IVC) system, which lets vehicles exchange information with other nearby vehicles. NEC is currently developing a probe information system for collecting and using information such as the location and speed of moving vehicles and the windshield wiper activity status via the RVC and IVC systems. We have also started trialing an advanced information system for traffic networks that enables moving vehicles to perceive and recognize objects using sensors.

Constantly changing traffic conditions can be recognized in real time by exchanging probe information between moving vehicles via RVC and IVC. Traffic problems can be solved by letting vehicles change quickly to the best route. NEC has started a joint project with universities and car manufacturers, and is fully involved in realizing probe information systems. We are also working on developing advanced traffic networks together with the government and car manufacturers. This includes developing an ICT-based infrastructure for traffic information networks using RVC, standardizing the communication protocol for IVC systems, and standardizing communication devices.
NEC develops high-performance lithium-ion batteries in cooperation with car manufacturers, and also provides microcontroller technologies for control applications to promote the development, manufacture, and popularization of ecologically friendly cars. We also help implement eco-driving systems that let drivers improve their fuel efficiency by preventing sudden starts and jerky acceleration.
In addition to optimizing delivery routes using RFID, we help reduce environmental impact by improving transportation efficiency. We achieve this by using ICT to eliminate waste throughout the logistics system, such as by researching best matches between freight and transportation method, and by implementing cooperative deliveries.
