NEC Rice Paddy Story NEC Rice Paddy Cultivation Project with Asaza Fund

FY 2012 Activities

On March 11 2011, one day before an event to celebrate the shipping of new sake, the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred and NEC's rice paddies and areas around them were damaged.
Nevertheless, the damage at the sites was quickly repaired and the planned activities for FY 2012 were also undertaken as scheduled beginning with rice planting. The impacts of radioactivity that were a major concern did not reach a level where there were any large effects on the event activities and crops. Thanks to the cooperation of local volunteers, the activities were continued throughout the year safely without problems. Rice cultivation at a paddy field in ravine in Kamiota district of Ushiku City measuring about 1,800 m2 was conducted smoothly and rice could be harvested as planned to brew new sake.
When Higashitanaka and Kamiota districts are combined, a total of 955 persons participated in FY 2012, including the main events such as rice planting experience, harvesting and threshing, as well as persons that participated in the master course and volunteers. (Cumulative total for eight years: 8,950 persons)
The rice harvest totaled 1,170 kg, enough to produce 1,900 bottles of new sake with each bottle containing 720 ml under the brand "Having a Drink, Enjoying a Laugh" (Ecology through IT).
Additionally, in a survey of living organisms in a paddy field in ravine in Kamiota district of Ushiku City before and after the restoration, an increase in the number of species and quantities of living organisms was confirmed and the district and areas around it are anticipated to become teeming with more diverse life forms.

Cooperation with Asaza Fund, a nonprofit organization

Cooperation with the Asaza Fund, a nonprofit organization, that started in April 2003 will celebrate its tenth anniversary in FY 2013. "Even partnership" with the Asaza Fund has been the most important topic from the beginning of the cooperative activities. Both the Asaza Fund and NEC have been strongly aware of creating a new social value by mutually utilizing skills and know-how in the expertise areas that are uniquely possessed by the two parties. By continuing to share the goal that was set at the onset of "Return to the wild of Japanese crested ibises in 100 years" by restoring paddy field in ravine in the watersheds of Lake Kasumigaura, nature that is rich in life has been restored to the NEC rice paddies beyond our wildest imagination, considering the devastation that was prevalent at that time.
