Green Glossary

Index

PC Green Label

An environmental label implemented in Japan and established by the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA). The mark can be used on personal computers that meet the relevant standards, such as by having an environmentally sound design and structure, and by providing consumers with appropriate information.

PCB

Poly chlorinated biphenyl. This is a noncombustible material with excellent thermal resistance and insulation characteristics. It is chemically stable and difficult to break down, and therefore accumulates easily in the fatty tissue of animals. PCBs were conventionally used as a heat medium and in insulating oils and coating materials. Manufacture of PCBs ceased in 1972 and measures were taken to prevent environmental contamination by PCBs after it was discovered that PCBs were toxic and could cause skin lesions and liver disease in humans.

PDCA cycle

A means by which ongoing improvement is implemented through a cycle of plan → do → check → act.

PRTR

PRTR: Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers. A database that collects information on the quantity of toxic chemical substances potentially hazardous to the environment released into the atmosphere, waterways, or ground, or emitted as waste materials, nationwide or in a specific region. PRTR also refers to the mechanism of creating and publicly releasing this database.

Polycarbonate

Generic name for a polymer in which an ester carbonate compound forms the main chain. This polymer is transparent and strong and features excellent impact resistance.

Polylactic acid

A plastic derived from polymerizing lactic acid that is created by fermented corn or other such plants. This plastic is now being produced in large quantities because it has the greatest thermal resistance and strength characteristics out of all the plant-derived plastics currently being mass produced.

Power consumption in standby mode

This is the amount of power consumed when an electrical device is not being used.

Product assessment

This means to pre-evaluate the environmental soundness of a product (whether it promotes energy and resource conservation, recycle, and safety) in the design and development stages so as to enable NEC to supply environmentally sound products. → Energy conservation

Production innovations

A means of eliminating waste in all business processes, particularly on the production floor, to improve customer satisfaction and to lower costs. Production innovations also lead to reducing environmental impact.
