An herbaceous annual related to cotton, kenaf is a member of the mallow family indigenous to West Africa. The stalk contains an abundance of fiber, making it ideal as a raw material for paper production, especially in China and Southeast Asia, where lumber resources are scarce. Kenaf is being considered as a viable alternative to common timbers because it grows rapidly and is known to absorb 3 to 8 times the amount of CO₂ , features that could help prevent forest depletion and global warming.
