NEC has introduced e-learning to improve the efficiency of employee training, which is undertaken by about 6,000 employees in Japan every year. From the perspective of CO2 emissions, these activities have significantly reduced the impact on the environment.
In the past, employees traveled by train or airplane from across Japan to attend training sessions that sometimes were only two hours long. And a large volume of paper was used to create thousands of textbooks.
With e-learning, employees can study at their own desks whenever they wish using a PC and the Internet. So the movement of people is greatly reduced. And because PCs can be used in place of textbooks, the volume of paper consumed is significantly reduced as well. As a result, CO2 emissions have decreased by about 95% compared with those for conventional approaches. Of course, this figure also takes into account the CO2 emissions generated through these activities, for example, from the use of PCs.
NEC has also incorporated e-learning as part of its employee training at overseas bases, including environmental education.
