People:Promote ecology through virtual experience.

Improve people's awareness of environmental protection by using ICT to provide a virtual reality experience.

To reduce environmental impact, we must develop a realistic infrastructure and mechanisms to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Another important factor is to improve public awareness of environmental preservation and to encourage people to take action. To help achieve these, people must recognize the reality of the damage caused by environmental destruction. People's awareness of environmental preservation can be raised by using ICT to provide environmental information through realistic virtual experiences such as simulations, games, and educational materials. By using ICT, simulations in a virtual world where you can experience what you cannot in the real world can be enriched.

Key actions for more ecologically aware people:

  • Improve awareness of the environment by using ICT to enable virtual experiences.
  • Enrich environmental contents such as simulations, games, and educational materials.
  • Create a new mechanism to combine real and virtual experiences.
  • Build virtual communities to share information about environmental issues.

Simulations, games, and educational contents

NEC provides virtual contents with high-level virtual experience effects such as simulations in which environmental changes vary depending on the user's choices, and highly entertaining role-playing games where environmental protection is the goal. NEC also develops environmental education tools for e-learning. In addition, we are working on building virtual communities where people can share information about environmental issues and raise awareness by using communication infrastructure platforms such as SNS (social networking systems).

Creating a business model by linking the real world and virtual world

To improve awareness of environmental preservation, we have created mechanisms to link the real world and virtual world. This allows us to offer a new business model that uses ICT to protect the environment. One example is ecotonoha, a virtual tree project established by NEC in 2003. For every 100 leaves (messages) grown on the virtual tree, a real tree is planted. So far, 5,768 trees have been planted as part of the ecotonoha project.
