The NEC Group aims to be a “leading global company leveraging the power of innovation to realize an information society friendly to humans and the earth” as envisioned in the NEC Group Vision 2017, looking forward to the 40th anniversary of the C&C Declaration in 2017.

Towards the realization of this vision, the “NEC Group Environmental Management Action Plan 2017/2030” was drafted in 2010. Environmental activities with specific goals from the three perspectives of “low carbon,” “ecosystem and biodiversity preservation,” and “resource recycling and conservation” are being carried out.

As a part of efforts to strengthen activities in the area of low carbon, initiatives were carried out to ascertain the greenhouse gas emissions not only for the group itself, but also including software and service along the entire supply chain. These activities were based on the GHG Protocol approach to ascertainment and reduction of emission of greenhouse gases targeting entire supply chains, an approach currently widely-used worldwide as a standard for emissions calculation. Particular attention is now being given to indirect emissions, called Scope 3, such as emissions of suppliers, and emissions due to commuting of employees and energy use during the use of products sold. Analysis of data has shown emissions in these areas to be considerably great. The NEC Group has continued its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions in society through its energy-saving products and ICT solutions. These efforts will contribute to reducing emissions along the entire supply chain as we intently work to advance the NEC Group Environmental Management Action Plan 2017/2030. Initiatives to reduce emissions based on communication with companies along the supply chain will be a key to our success from here on.

The market will continue to expand in the environment and energy business, one of the mainstays of the NEC Group. This expansion will include not only the scale of the market, but also the range of energy management. Range will expand from the unit of household and building to the local community or city. In order to succeed in this competitive environment, NEC must first practice advanced environmental and energy solutions within the group itself, and then translate our successes into provision of solutions to others. From FY 2013, NEC will advance the full-scale operation of a smart community centered on the Tamagawa Plant.

Key issues for FY 2013 will include steady progress on the action plan toward 2017, initiatives involving our supply chains, and contributions to environmental and energy business. As we strengthen our efforts in these areas, we will advance several steps closer to the company we aim to become. The future holds great promise for the environmental management of the NEC Group.
